Although the Igor Engraver manual doesn't say so for the Windows version, one has to delete the entries of the instrument in the Layouts field in the Piece window, both in part and score, in order to change instrument for an existing musician. This is done by first selecting the instrument one wants to delete in its part and then click on the Trash button below the Layouts field, and then in the score instrument list selecting the instrument and clicking on the Layout to musician button between the Layouts and Musicians fields. This way the Switch instrument button below the Musicians field becomes enabled if the musician in question is selected.
