The Server is a Windows-only application that is required to use the "Rio Receiver" - an early networked MP3 player that had both line-level and speaker-level outputs.
The Rio Receiver itself runs Linux (!), and the role of the server is twofold. Firstly, it provides (using SSDP and NFS) a copy of the embedded kernel over the network to allow the Receiver to boot. Secondly, it serves the music to that kernel!
While native versions of the server for Linux, the embedded kernel itself contained some proprietary drivers which are not available EXCEPT as part of the Windows Rio Receiver Server. The alternative servers therefore tend to include modified, reverse-engineered, versions of the kernel with some limitations.
