QuickSilver An OPEN SOURCE Win32 Mixmaster Anonymous Remailer Client Introduction QuickSilver is PRIVACY software. It can give you complete privacy in your email and newsgroup postings. Why would this be of interest to you? Do you have fears that taking part in newsgroup discussions could lead to your harassment or stalking by some internet kook? We've all seen stories about this on CNN. Using QuickSilver you can post articles with absolutely no traces of their true origin. A QuickSilver message cannot be traced to you. In another scenario, you are one of several individuals under surveillance. Your government believes you are involved in subversive activities. Using QuickSilver all individuals can communicate freely. Observers will find they can neither read this mail nor trace it to its destination—even after tracing dozens of messages. Surveillance of the message recipient's connections will reveal only the receipt of a message. Its origin cannot be determined nor its content. Suppose you work for an organization that is involved in criminal activity. You believe you must inform the proper authorities regarding the activities. To 'go public' with this information would not only affect your employment adversely, it could indeed be life threatening. With QuickSilver, your privacy is effectively bullet-proof. How does this work? QuickSilver provides this magic through a kind of identity laundering. Using a special high security protocol, called 'mixmaster', your outgoing message will be multi-encrypted and sent through a series of remailers. These are available around the world. Today some 45 or more remailers exist. Each server has a single purpose, That is, to accept a message, strip away all traces of it's origin—substituting its own—and send it on to either another Remailer or the actual recipient. It is this process (encrypting + remailing) that makes your mail untraceable and unreadable to all but the intended recipient. I would like you to understand that mixmaster is not written by me. It is designed and implemented by cryptologists and computer security experts. I am honestly not worthy of those positions. On the other hand, I get to write the human interface. This is very fortunate for me since it is my work you actually see. However, QS is only a simple email program with extensions for handling mixmaster messages.
