Just throwing this out there.

I just got off work, and I see everyones already very active. I'll have to try out some of those tricks and see what I can come up wtih. As far as backing files up, I always do that. I'm always hacking away at various Linux files just to see what will happen and what I can improve. I havent backed up any of the CrossOver files yet , guess I should before I start. :)

Anyway, I did some work with the .NET framework in Windows and noticed in some of the PSP ini files that it's mentioned. I'll have to go back and look so I can post what I'm talking about in just bit. My point is do you think the .NET framework not being fully ported to Linux might have something to do with some of the issues? Personally I really don't think so or it most likely would not even load, but then again you never know.

One last thing, if you use the Loki installer the dir cxoffice gets placed in your home dir automatically. So there's no need to do anything more as far as that goes. I tried the Mandrake RPM and this does not happen with it.

Well time to get to work. I'll post my results in bit.

I honestly had no idea PSP 8 used the .NET framework. I don't know if that would have anything to do with it though. It might for your issue (the crash on startup). As for mine, it's doing some rather strange things:

To start with, I Created ~/.cxoffice/dotwine/fakewindows/Windows/Temp/Temp Files/JSC10024[username]

I also created ~/.cxoffice/dotwine/fake_windows/Windows/Temp/Temp Files/JSC10024 to see if everything in the Windows/Temp/Temp Files would get deleted.

Started Paint Shop Pro 8

Noticed that the JSC10024_[username] got deleted (but the JSC10024 remained)! So I recreated it.

Tried to do a flood fill. Same error. PSP 8 exits after clicking OK in the error dialog box window. Both the JSC10024_[username] and the JSC10024 directories remained.

Restarted PSP 8 again, and again ONLY the JSC10024_[username] got deleted! This tells me that:

  1. JSC10024_[username] is the correct name for the directory to be created.
  2. PSP 8 deletes that particular directory (and not any others) when it starts up.
  3. Creating it after PSP 8 is running doesn't help PSP 8 recognize it's there.

What I still don't know (and something that bugs this old hacker ;) is WHY? Why is PSP 8 destroying that particular directory on startup? And why isn't it detecting it if it's created after PSP 8 starts?

It's driving me nutz because it worked fine in normal WINE. Also since then I have upgraded to Kernel 2.4.24, and now I wonder if there's something in the new Kernel code that's doing it? I should check what version of WINE CrossOver Office uses, d/l and install that version and see if it does the same thing under that with my previous instructions that I posted (as TechChiq) at Frank's Corner awhile back. If so it'd tell us there's kernel trickery going on that's causing a new issue. If it doesn't delete the file, then it's something in CrossOver Office that's causing the issue.

I'll see if I can perform that test tonight. I hope having two versions of WINE in here won't be too conflicting. Shouldn't, since Cx is being invoked directly from /opt/cxoffice/bin dir and the free wine is usually in the /bin dir. I'll just be careful of that. :)

More later (hopefully)...

My bad. It optionally uses the .NET framework and seems to be speifically the J# redistributable package.
