THERE'S NO REASON AT ALL TO USE INTERNET EXPLORER!!!
I do some web development, and my clients naturally expect that my work works as intended on all major browsers. That means having IE on hand. Am I a fool for satisfying my clients without having to run Windows?
A Linux-using friend has a job that requires her to use the company's intranet, which only works in IE. Is she a fool for keeping her job without having to run Windows?
There are reasons to run IE. In an enterprise environment, like I'm in, we have applications that are Microsoft based and only work with IE. I don't like that fact, but there isn't a lot I can do about it. I would like to be able to allow our users to run on MAC's, but I can't because of those IE only Microsoft applications. This is why I am here looking at CodeWeavers CrossOver application.
Big list of reasons....even for gamers....try getting this site to work in
your native system browser;

There are numerous sites similarly disposed, that will only work in IE7/8,
seems like I can find a new one everyday if I go looking....
Cheers!
The reason is obvious. It is quickly becoming the most used web browser on the web. For those of us working with web-related information it is naturally extremely important to make sure that our content communicates no matter what operating system or web browser. Most of us are pretty tolerant regarding different users and different needs.
And, to be honest. I don´t care much for your tone. Please pause and collect your thoughts before writing. It makes for a much nicer experience for all of us if we can keep the discussion civil.
Have a nice day!

Dunno about that bit, - it's lost quite a bit of ground in recent times,
particularly in Europe.
& - it's still perceived as a security risk 😖
Yes, and it IS a security risk.
I might have been a bit premature, I was judging form of our own statistics, we do hava A LOT, but felt the need to check out the facts.
Statcoutner says FF 3.6 is the biggest in Europe, with IE 8.0 as a close second.

I stand corrected!
Having IE 8 work with Crossover is still an issue with me however, since I still need to test for it, the user base is simply too large to ignore.

Please tell that banks and other companies that
still make IE only sites. It's stupid that they still rely on Active Server Pages that refuse to work on Firefox. Hence why IE4Linux exists...
IE8 is hardly the worst browser. IE6 is the worst browser. IE7 is a tolerable annoyance. IE8, by comparison, isn't that bad.
And since some varieties of irritating people decided to write half-baked code that only works in IE6 (like Cisco), not to mention the blithering masses who think the Internet is the blue E and never update their computers, I'm required to keep a copy of IE6 around. If I'm forced to use IE6, I would much rather have it packaged as a compatibility mode of a newer, less dilapidated version of IE than keep the dinosaur that is version 6.
I very much doubt that anyone running any version of IE in CrossOver or Wine actually wants to use it as their standard browser.
I have been a Business Developer including web design etc. Why do I need IE? As a rule I run Safari and Foxfire. Dear Robin when you are creating web sites, etal for clients and their customers/clients rest assured that 90(+-) are on Windows -at least 60% of corporate are still on XP, and then on Vista -very few as yet upgraded to Win7. It cost large companies and medium ones as well millions of dollars to upgrade an entire company. IE is still the most common denominator. I literally have to check every document or site which I and my graphic partner create on MAC OX 10 then recheck and make corrections so it will work on XP and then again on Vista. Not an easy task. Right now I have a client-that altho it requires great security, their information-having to do with $$$$$ is only workable on IE. Bummer? You bet. Luckily I have several PC's as well as MAC however if I could get IE-preferably IE* to work on my MC, life would be so much better.
Relax, dear Robin, no one can be all things to all people.
So can someone tell me if I purchase Crossover, will IE* work on my MAC for most applications, mainly IE right now?
Many thanks

IE6 & IE7 are mostly functional via CrossOver on a Mac. Not everything works, there are a pieces that are buggy.
I suggest you give a trial of CrossOver a shot:
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/download_trial/
It's a fully functional version of our software with a time limit on it (30 days from the date of install). If you have any questions, please feel free to email us (info@codeweavers.com).
Gail,
I was in a corporation where the tracking software was built to work only on IE6 originally. About 80% of it was browser agnostic but that left 20% that had to be done on IE. Since I dual-booted in openSuse and WindowsXP (at home) at the time I installed IE6 in wine and had no problem with the IE6 required pages while using openSuse. In crossover you can even have both IE6 and IE7 installed at the same time in different bottles. I've used IE6 on cx and it works almost exactly as it does on windows. And IE7 seems to run quite well on crossover mac (looks pretty too).
Give it a try.
Ever heard about ActiveX ?! 😈
I go to DeVry where they just recently switched over to a wifi authentication system called Bluesocket. It is incompatible with anything 64-bit (I need to open a special x86 version of safari just to log onto it), and requires that you have Mcaffee installed or some other similar device. It will not work on Linux machines, and only loosely tolerates Macs. A friend and I got by it using crossover, and a version of IE in a bottle with Mcaffee installed in it. There are reasons. The world is stupid enough to still think that the sun shines out of Microsofts ass. The world is afraid of change and thus Mac nor linux will ever become the leading OS in the world. We, the cultured, the intellectual, masses realize what a waste Microsoft is, but we are few and the huddled lay-man is many.
