Aquanox - Unsupported App- PROBLEM - HELP!!

Well, I am guessing this is the first shot taken on this game. I also am brand new and I am going to stand out bc I am feeling my way around.

Anyway, Aquanox seemed to install smoothly. The opening scene (endless), a movie, played beautifully. BUT once the cutscene ended, black screen. I had sound track but no visual. Help...???

Hi,

You will need provide us with details of your platform/OS (version)/videocard before
anyone can really help. You might try 1>installing directx runtime into the same bottle,
2>enabling 'emulate a virtual desktop' in winecfg. Failing that, you may have to gather
a debug log, post it to a free file repo (rapidshare.com or the like), then post that
URL back here so others can grab the log and look for any obvious problems...see;

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/submittechsupportlog

Cheers!

ps: oh, and which version of the game is this?..CD?...Steam?

Hi! Many thanks!

Ok: system specs:

MacBook Intel Core Duo 2.4 gHz
Ram: 4 gigs
OS: 10.6.2
Video Card: GMA x3100

I installed DirectX runtime (legacy) and enabled virtual desktop. It still crashes right after the opening movie. I'll try running it with a different bottle - Win98.

If that fails I will run a bug log for you. :(

Wish me luck...

Sue

Hi Again!

An update:

Aquanox is installed directly from the CD.

Thanks. I have one more tweak to try...

Hi,

Which version of crossover are you using?

Cheers!

Don -

My Bad!

I had installed CrossOver Games demo (8.14) a few days prior to approval as an advocate. By the time I signed on, the "demo" version was expiring. I did not realize that I would be able to register the CrossOver Games version. So I was running CrossOver 9. I know - dumb arse! :(

I realized today that I was able to keep using CrossOver Games. A few hours ago. When I checked, I found that version gives me the ability to run that report. :-[

So, right now I am eating crow and reinstalling. I will be testing under CrossOver Games. At least now I know where to find everything it should go a big more smoothly.

I am really sorry for being such a total idiot. :-[ I am not always this clueless. GAWD!!! :(

I will try to get it running anew. If that fails I will produce debug report.

Sue

Hi,

No problems Sue -- this is, after all, what the forums are for,
it just occurred to me when you couldn't find the debug stuff, you must
have been using another crossover version. Keep us posted - if it's
going to run at all under crossover (games), we will get it there...

Cheers!

Don -

Thanks for being so patient about this.

Yup, I am gonna stick with this game until we have a yes or a no.

There are several games I would like to see made available. I have some of the coolest games ever made sitting right in front of me.

Keep your fingers crossed. This is an amazing game.

Sue

Hi again,

I just noticed there's an unconfirmed winebug attached to this game
wrt the blackscreen business....see;

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20794

That one, starts to look like a possible regression in wine itself
wrt d3d7/8 stuffs, but this is only speculation on my part (without
the game itself to test, it's hard to say..but...I have a number of
titles from circa 2000 that display pretty much the same problem)

It would also seem to be affected by the notorious winebug #6971 ;

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6971

That, won't be a problem if you can run the game fullscreen, but if
it will only run with emulate a virtual desktop enabled, bug 6971
will drive you nutso with frustration in under 5minutes of gameplay
...I know, there are multiple titles 'out there' subject to this bug,
and I own a few....they've all been put on the backburner here, hopeful
that the xinput2 (which will make it into wine someday soon I hope) will
improve things ; some of them it's possible to work around the issue
with a gamepad, but not all....

Not that I want to put you off any, but just FYI as it were...

Cheers!

Don -

That's great info. I will see what I can do. My dogs are staring and squeaking bc they want to go to bed. I will turn in and try to get working on this early tomorrow.

Hey, if it has to be put on the back burner, there are plenty of of other games in a holding pattern. We will do our best on this and give it a good faith effort. If it does not work out at least we will have tried. We will come back to it at a later date.

Keep your thoughts and advice coming my way. I am extremely grateful.

Sue

Ouch...

I've just ascertained that this title does in fact incorporate
a DRM mechanism (CD check) on the original disc-based release. As
such, the following information applies here;

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/dmca

Further, depending on exactly with version you have (I'm guessing all
the CD releases were version 1.0), you should be aware there were a
number of (official) patches released for this title, which one should
probably upgrade their CD installation with as a matter of course.

To apply these patches, simply download the patch executable(s), and then
in cxsetup ;

Highlight the bottle you have Aquanox installed into > Configure > Control panel
Click on 'Run' > Browse to the download patch file(s) > Open ==> Run

Patches should apply without error following this route. The patches can be obtained from;

http://www.fileplanet.com/20157/0/0/0/1/section/Patches

Most people will probably need the following 2 patches;

Aquanox 1.xx to 1.15 Patch (US)

AquaNox v1.15 - v1.17 Patch (US)

Cheers!

Don -

You beat me to it! Fileplanet was my first stop this morning. LOL! You are an amazing guy! 😎

Thanks so much. I will work on the patches as soon as I feed my guys and get them settled.

Nothing is ever easy. 😭 😭

Sue 😈

Ahh!...

You could also check out the following WineHQ AppDB link ;
although the tester refers to using wine version 1.1.36 and
being on a linux/Debian system, they appear to have it running
and whatever they did might work in crossover-games too. You
might be able to PM them and ask what they did?...

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19763

Cheers!

Don,

You know, that is excellent news. If it is running in Linux/Debian with Wine we should be able to get it running on OS 10. Aren't they both based in Unix?

I hate DRM's. I've been known to buy games and put them in mothballs until a patch is released to deactivate or remove the DRM. Or I don't even buy the title until it is old enough that they release it with no DRM. I am not alone, either. Arghh! I am not surprised a DRM is gumming things up. :(

Would it be easier for me to head over to Steam to buy their version of Aquanox?

Thanks once again. I hope I have better news very soon.

Sue

Hi again,

Typically speaking, with a title of this age, if it can be made

to work in linux with Wine, it'll work with CXG on both platforms (a
lot of older game titles are like this)...

Wrt Steam, I'm not sure if they carry this title as such, and regarding
DRM here, a lot of Steam titles still do include DRM mechanisms - the big
difference is the Steam hoisted DRM techniques don't require any disc (CD/DVD)
access to work (an action very limited with Macs due to their scsi driver).
Instead it all happens 'over the wire' so to speak...and works...most of
the time, on both platforms. There are a number of exceptions here. not all
work...

Good luck!

Hey Don -

Sorry for the brain fart. It is actually gamersgate that has aquanox:

http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-AQUANOX/aquanox

Now that I know the game is patched so much, I may just buy it at there in the future. Especially if it runs on my Mac. I own the CD, but I might look to own the patched version for simplicity. Likewise, Gamersgate also sells the sequel called Aquanox 2: Revelation which is also an awesome game. :)

Anyway, I am currently loading those patches. Today has been a stream of phone calls and people showing up. I have been chasing my own tail all day.

Keep your fingers crossed that this works.

Sue

Ahh...thanks for the link -- I wasn't aware of that distributor
before now, but after a quick peek through their site, I get the
impression they work like other direct download sites, in that the
DRM mechanism as such is presented as the registration/activation
process when you first start the game -- most but not all of these
things work in crossover/wine ; I've a number of direct2drive and
telltale games titles like this - in the former case, if it doesn't
work I can email their support crew for a manual activation code (and
these all work) -- the rest of the time, in both cases, it has usually
entailed some kind of work-around to get working, but it can be made
to work in the end. This will all get better in the crossover-games 9.0
release when it appears - feel free to post to this thread if you need
help with that registration/activation process most of these vendors use...

Cheers!

Don -

I cannot get the patches to run. With Fileplanet, I could not even download them. I got a dialog box which said: error type 403: access forbidden

So I tried gamershell. Once again, it downloaded but would not run. I could not get the patch to run...

The command "/Users/suzannedonovan/Downloads/AquaNox_eng_hist.1.exe" returned 1.

StdOut:

StdErr:winewrapper.exe:error: cannot execute L"Y:\Downloads\AquaNox_eng_hist.1.exe"

So I tried snagging them from gamespot. The same error:

The command "/Users/suzannedonovan/Downloads/AquaNox_eng_hist.1.exe" returned 1.

StdOut:

StdErr:winewrapper.exe:error: cannot execute L"Y:\Downloads\AquaNox_eng_hist.1.exe"

Not sure if that is related to platform or if the patch is not available? Am I better off going over to gamersgate to purchase the download? Will it even download and open or am I going to run into the same issue??

My experience with gamersgate, etc. is that there is no need for an unlock code. At least some of these sites claim they are DRM free. I assume that with some games that is case-by-case maybe?

Is there a way to get these patches to run or ... I think that FIleplanet no longer has the patches.

Fun fun!

Sue

Hi again,

There's something wrong there...perhaps a bad download
or something? Although I don't have the game itself, I did
grab a patch and tried it here, and it does execute and pop
up he installation GUI etc. It should behave the same on the
Mac...unless something has done something strange to the file
permissions when downloaded/written to disk, and it's no longer
marked executable...not sure, I don't have a Mac....

I can't really advise you as to whether or not to buy the version
from gamersgate -- as said, I didn't even know of them until you
linked the URL, and I have no first hand experience with their game
releases at all ; for what my advice is worth here, you'd do as well
tossing a coin so to speak B)

Cheers!

Hi Don -

Busy day with a doctor's appt. taking up my morning.

OK. I cannot get the patches to run. 😠 Even though I have gotten them from 3 different sources. Not one will progress beyond the dialog box asking me if I really want to patch the game. I click OK. Then I am told it "cannot find the old file. But a new file of that name exists but cannot install bc file contents do not match." Well!! LOL!

Here is the scoop. The game itself is running very well. 😏 No problems at all. (Recall, I mistakenly tried to run it under CrossOver rather than CrossOver Games). After I discovered that, I've been trying to get those patches to update the game. This is the first time trying it with CrossOver Games. If running it in Windows I would patch the copy for sure... If it runs now without a problem, great. I will keep at it to make sure it does.

If I run into performance issues I think I will grab the patched game at Gamersgate to see if patches will rectify any problems. For now it is a question of running the game through to make sure it continues without hitches. Maybe we can find a work- around if a hitch arises.

WIsh me luck! I got notice that the sequel was approved today so that will be my next target.

Thanks!
Sue
