Templates or parts of them can be imported between documents without a glitch.
FrameMaker has a history of excellent backwards compatibility.
In FrameMaker (since version 6.0+SGML) you can choose to work in either regular FrameMaker using poweful paragraph-, character-, and table-designers and -catalogs, or in structured mode using its powerful structure backend (EDD) either plain , relying on the above mentioned tools, or interwoven with powerful hierarchial formatting rules.
Clear as mud, eh? Only those know who have to work with complex documents.

2. You can choose from a lot of plugins and addons, free or at some cost.
3. Comes with option of dowloading FrameMaker Developement Kid (FDK).
4. You can buy a 3rd party FrameScript (http://www.framescript.com) or in Germany ElmScript (http://www.elmscript.de), which is based on FDK that helps you address every node in your document etc. and automize your work.
