Keep going full Steam ahead in 2024

As announced here, the Steam client will stop running on Windows 7 and Windows 8 in 2024. Any new Steam installs should continue to work in 2024, as CrossOver now defaults to installing Steam into a Windows 10 bottle. If you have an older Windows 7 or Windows 8 Steam bottle that you want to keep using in 2024, we have a 30 second fix outlined for you here.

1. Select your Steam install from your bottles list, and click Wine Configuration in the Control Panels in the right sidebar.

2. At the bottom of Wine Configuration, change the Windows version to Windows 10.

3. Click Apply, then OK to close and save.

Note that CrossOver will still display Windows 7 in the top right corner of the bottle screen: that field is tied to the Windows version used to install the bottle. You can always double check with Wine Configuration to make sure the Windows version is set correctly.

We’ve had support for installing Steam into a Windows 10 bottle for many years now, and we’re confident most things should work just fine. If you run into an issue upgrading your Steam bottle to Windows 10, please contact our technical support team.

Thank you for making this so easy for us Steam users.

The second step would be to change the version in cxbottle.conf, which will ensure it isn't switched back on updates and also makes the UI display the correct version.
