Multiple versions but where are they.

I started with crossover some months ago, until late last year when I install Crossover preview. Thats the only one what shows in my applications. I know I downloaded crossover 25 the other week and have ben using that, but want to install a later version so I downloaded it, ran it and check Crossover version and it says it is an older version. So why is my applications only showing Crossover preview, and where has the standard version 25 gone let alone version 24.0.7 what im launching from my downloads/safari.

Crossover, and it's variants, are installed in the Applications folder. You can click on the get info option when you right click the Crossover icons in that directory. That will tell you where the application resides.

I only have Crossover preview last modified September 2024 in my applications folder. If. use the Finder search top right on Mac it shows the version 24.0.7 I download and looks like overwritten version 25, but these Arne tin directly in my application folder

Hi Lew,

I am no Mac expert, it sounds like your system might be defaulting to the Crossover Preview app rather than the standard version you’re trying to run.

Could you Check your Applications folder (and any subfolders) to see if multiple Crossover apps are present. Use “Get Info” (right-click the app icon and choose Get Info) to confirm each app’s version ?

Another thing you could try is using the crossover removal tool. It’s designed to clean up any remnants of older installations that might be causing version conflicts, so running it could remove the Preview version and any leftover files that might be interfering with your standard version installations.

I’d suggest checking out the tool’s instructions on the CodeWeavers support page, running the tool, and then reinstalling your desired version. This should ensure you have a clean slate and help prevent any mix-ups between versions.

Go to System Settings > Spotlight, uncheck any categories besides "Applications" in the "Search Results" section.

Then use Spotlight to search for Crossover. It will show you each Crossover application you have installed.

Open a Finder window for each version of Crossover.

Create an alias to each of those applications. As you create each one, move that alias to your Desktop. Then rename that alias so that you’ll know which version that alias will launch. For example, you might use the name Crossover Preview for that version, Crossover 25 for the latest release version, and Crossover 24 for Crossover 24.0.7 if you have kept that one around.

When you want to run a Windows application in Crossover, first use the correct alias on your Desktop to launch the version of Crossover you wish to use to run that application. Then run that application from Crossover’s main window by double-clicking that application’s icon. Do NOT use an icon in your Dock to launch a Windows application because you will not have control over the version of Crossover used if you do that.

Perhaps the other versions are still in your download folder. When you download and unpack the file it remains in the download folder unless you move it to Application folder yourself.

When I do the spotlight search with everything but applications I get three. Crossover Preview. Crossover-applications and then crossover-download. Both of these when opened are 24.0.07.

I open my applications folder on Mac but only Crossover Preview is there, get info doesn't show anything else. I have to open thee overwritten version 24.0.7 directly from spotlight. Crossover 24.0.7 is in a separate folder Mactintosh HD>Users>Myname>Applications what else constant mostly my steam games a couple unrelated Apps. This version opens the one ive been using 24.0.7 but date says it was last modified In January 2025..

You're making this unnecessarily complicated. Put those three Crossover applications ANYWHERE YOU WANT. If you're using only one Mac user account it doesn't matter at all. Make the aliases as I instructed above.

To open a Finder window showing the location of an application found via Spotlight search, select the application in Spotlight, then press and hold the Command key to reveal the file path at the bottom of the preview, and finally, press Command + R to open the file in a new Finder window.

To make an alias, select the application (or file or whatever) then go to the FINDER->MENU BAR->FILE->MAKE ALIAS. You can then drag that alias anywhere you want, I suggested your Desktop (~/Desktop) above.

If you don't have the current release version, 25.0.0, you can get it from your account page: https://www.codeweavers.com/account/downloads

You should delete any Crossover applications which are duplicates or which you don't intend to use.

/Applications is the place where applications get installed by default.

/Applications is the usual location for the Crossover application but it only gets there IF YOU PUT IT THERE YOURSELF. Which you should do.

~/Applications is for applications installed for use only by that one Mac user account.

~/Applicatons/Crossover is the default location for Crossover's little "launcher" applications.

~/Library/Application Support/Crossover/Bottles is the default location for the bottles created by and used by Crossover.

If you are new to Macs you need to make yourself familiar with file path conventions and common operations.

If you don't want to do actual testing for Codeweavers and/or don't want your use of Crossover to be a hobby project, use only full retail releases of Crossover – not the "preview" or beta releases WHICH ARE FOR TESTING not for general use for playing games or running other applications.
