Stuttering Issues in AoE2 HD & CS2 on Crossover 25

Hello,

Since updating to Crossover 25, I’ve been experiencing persistent stuttering during gameplay in Age of Empires II HD. The game now micro stutters every 5–8 seconds, which never occurred in previous versions of Crossover where my experience was completely smooth.

In addition to AoE2, I’ve noticed that CS2 is also affected – in fact, the stuttering in CS2 appears even more pronounced and disruptive.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • I created a fresh bottle and ensured that I’m using the recommended Windows version.
  • I experimented with both “DXVK Backend for D3D11” and “D3DMetal” modes in the bottle settings.
  • I’ve adjusted in‑game settings (lowering graphics quality, disabling VSync, and reducing resolution) to see if that mitigates the stutter.
  • I made sure no unnecessary background processes (like antivirus scans) are interfering.
  • I completely closed Steam and restarted Crossover between configuration changes to ensure settings are applied.

None of these steps have resolved the issue. Given that previous versions of Crossover did not have this problem, it seems likely that something in Crossover 25 (or its interaction with these games) is causing these performance hiccups.

Has anyone else encountered similar issues, or is this a known bug with the latest release? Any suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

  • M4 Max 128RAM
  • MacOS: 15.3.2

Hey,

the same with AOE 2 DE on a MacBook Pro M1 Max 32GB, MacOS: 15.3.2. I tried also the same settings as described but nothing solved it. New installation of both programs brings the same result.

I also did a test with a MacBook Air M3 with 16GB (MacOS 14 and 15). The system was completely reseted and everything fully new installed with the same result.
