New CrossOver user - unsure of how multiplayer play works

Good evening,

As the title says, I am a new crossover user. So far I have tried a couple single-player games that I own via Steam and I am very pleased with the experience. Now there's a multiplayer game I'd like to try (it's Heroes of Hammerwatch II, which hasn't received a compatibility log yet, but I'm not asking just about this game), and after reading the FAQs and searching info on the internet, I still have my doubts about the plausibility of using CrossOver to play multiplayer games.

My concern is whether it is possible to receive an in-game ban, or a VAC ban, or some such thing in multiplayer games ran via CrossOver, even when I own a license for them in Steam or GOG and run them via said platforms. I have read in the FAQs that games with Anti-Cheat systems aren't supported, so I guess these are out of the question, and I am specifically asking about games without built-in Anti-Cheat systems (e.g. Heroes of Hammerwatch II). Is CrossOver safe to use with multiplayer games that don't have anti-cheat systems, or do I still the risk of specific games detecting CrossOver and indetifying it as an illegal modification and thus have my account banned? Should I do research about a specific multiplayer game i want to play every time I want try it a new one out?

I am not tech savvy at all, I can get to understand whatever you tell me about the topic but my lack of knowledge in the field is what is prompting me to ask this question. I am unsure of how CrossOver really works works, and as they say, better be safe than sorry. Thank you in advance for your replies.

Hey,
I don't think anyone will or can give you a definitive answer, but it should be safe most of the time.
It depends heavily on the used anti-cheat method, usually a game will just not start or not allow to join a match if the anti cheat engine will not run or detects an anomaly. VAC for example searches for cheats, so if you don't use them (and there is no error in the database) CrossOver should be safe for VAC.
But nobody can guarantee you anything. The best would be to check the compatibility database and, if possible, ask the support if they would detect this (yeah, most likely they can't help with that).

Please Note: This Forum is for non-application specific questions relating to installation/configuration of CrossOver. All application-specific posts to this Forum will be moved to their appropriate Compatibility Center Forum.
