Path of Exile 2

Good day! Just purchased my first Apple Silicon Mac, and excited for it to arrive next week.

Given that PoE reportedly runs well, just curious if anyone braved release day for PoE 2’s early access? I played the ‘heck’ out of Diablo 3, but the buzz over PoE has me reconsidering diving into Diablo IV right away.

Best,
Aaron

(I will try CO Preview next week and try it out — haven’t seen any reports on that forum yet.)

I have not had any luck trying to get it to run :(

It downloaded, installed, and when I try to launch the game, I see the window open and then immediately close.

1

Thanks, Kent. I'll let you know if I have any luck on my side. Have you tried CrossOver Preview?

No luck on Preview either.

1

Thanks, RF.

I may pay for the early access just to support them, confirm your result, and post a Preview report -- but given the million or so folks trying to get in this weekend, they may not notice my contribution... ;)

I was able to get it working by following the instructions here: https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Guide:Path_of_Exile_on_Mac_using_Windows_Client

Here is a short snippet for what got mine working:
Locate and open the configuration file in ~/Documents/My Games/Path of Exile 2/poe2_production_Config.ini for M series systems. If the file has text, change the renderer_type setting from Vulkan to DirectX12.

Thx Kent! - It worked!!

But it is terribly laggy - slideshow type laggy

I´m on a Mac Mini M2 Pro with 32GB RAM

1

It works like a dream now!
I enabled D3DMetal under Graphics in Advanced Settings and the lag was gone right away.

I'm on Crossover Preview in case anybody wonders.

Fantastic! Thanks Kent/RF! Will install this next week and add my observations as well.

Thank you Kent/RF.
I tried using Steam and it constantly closed immediately, so I gave up and been playing on Steam Deck (Even though they said it is playable on Steam Deck, it is usually 30-45 fps, so not that great).
Followed the link and also used D3DMetal/MSync; it is definitely playing flawlessly (typically around 50-55FPS).

I am using M3 Pro MackBook Pro with 18 GPU core and 18 GB RAM just in case anybody wonder.
Played with both keyboard/mouse and 8BitDo Xbox style controller. Both works well.

If you run into the "Could not overwrite executable"-error - do the following:

-Go to your installation folder. Locate two files, PathOfExile.exe and PathOfExile.tmp.

-Rename, move, or delete PathOfExile.exe.

-Rename PathOfExile.tmp to PathOfExile.exe.

-Relaunch Path Of Exile.

Kent and RatedFluffy - how did you purchase the early access? Via Steam or PoE directly? I think I’d prefer Steam but not sure if I’d lose access to the files that I need to modify. (Apologies - new to all of this)

Through Steam for me. I'm glad it's working!

1

PoE directly for me

1

Aaron,

Whether you buy from Steam or POE site directly, it does not matter. If you bought from Steam, you can sign in using Steam account from POE website, then you can link an e-mail for primary login, which will allow you to create a password. Now you have 2 different ways to log in: email/password for PC client and Steam account for playing through steam.

I did this way to play both on crossover (which would be PC client loaded in a bottle) and steam deck using same account.

Thanks, APBear,

That's perfect. I like the flexibility that Steam offers (my iMac Pro has Bootcamp on it) and their reasonable policies. Looks like PoE has a similar pro-consumer philosophy.

Much thanks for the explanation! Based on all the help I've received in this thread, I purchased EA off of Steam.

My MBP can't come soon enough!

Installed Path of Exile 2 Early Access on Steam via a Crossover Bottle. Only needed to change ~/Documents/My Games/Path of Exile 2/production_Config.ini with renderer_type=DirectX12. I have it running on Mac Studio M1 Ultra with an Xbox Elite 2 Controller and runs at around 55-60 fps @ 4K. Have been playing on the Xbox as well and cross platform support works perfectly.

I am a bit lost about POE2.

The POE2 bottle with the .exe from the official site hangs here for hours and nothing happens:
image

Via Steam is also not possible it loads for minutes than shortly displays the login window but crashes right there after.

Mac Studio M2 MAX
MACOS 15.1.1
Crossover 24.0.5

Did a fresh install of crossover, did not work either.
Repaired bottles, reinstalled clean ones. No succes.

If you guys have any idea, that would be great

Anyone else have the issue with updates?

It starts, downloads stuff and gives an error message about being unable to overwrite executable with patched file.

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to this thread!

Got my M4 Max/64GB/40 core yesterday and got PoE2 spinning after following the instructions above. For me, CrossOver Preview/Dx12/MSync/HiRes has worked very well. I'm getting about 100 fps with nearly everything set quite high, with a screen resolution of 2056x1329 (native for the 16" MBP). Fans certainly spin up within a few minutes.

I would turn off dynamic resolution in the options as the gameplay looks a little grainy despite my resolution setting. Tweaking the target solution option didn't appear to change things much for me.

Aaron

Sorry Bosma, Vetter -- I haven't faced the issues you have. There are some great folks on these forums, but have you opened a support ticket?

I can play the game - works fine.
Just they release patches often and then the error message about being unable to overwrite. Solution that works for me is , go into the directory of PoE
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/Path of Exile/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Grinding Gear Games/Path of Exile 2

and delete PathOfExile.exe. There is another file called PathOfExile.tmp - rename this to PathOfExile.exe and the game starts fine.

I tried creating a new Bottle but the issue remains so kinda was thinking that i am not alone facing the issue.

Holy heck -- the graininess I had attributed to the dynamic resolution wasn't from that at all. I was using the NIR then not upscaling at all — incorrectly thinking the 8x AA would give the best appearance. Using the FSR setting in the menu cleaned up the poor antialiasing and really stabilized the frame pacing. Much better playing experience now.

I'm now able to push a bit higher on the resolution. I had to go into the ini file to get that done.

I am seeing some "hitching" about 3/4 of the time when I play. Oddly, it'll disappear on its own sometimes.

I had Crossover create a Windows 10 64Bit bottle and installed PofE2 into it using the file from the developer's page for Windows.
I used the same settings (D3DMetal and ESync) turned on because those settings worked for me with Diablo Immortal and Diablo IV - both of which required Direct X 12 - and after installing checked the game settings and the DirectX 12 renderer was turned on. Did not change any other in-game settings. Games works perfectly - though it is a bit too hard for a "casual gamer" like me IMHO. Hopefully after the Early Access they will change it to give you the option to select your difficulty level, though I do remember PoE also being pretty difficult at the beginning. I will say there is a lot more to learn in this game than the first as far as character development.

Hi Steven,

A couple thoughts:

  • I've been using MSync as I've found it a bit more performant, and ESync was giving some odd color flickers during the opening (no flickering during gameplay however). Interested to hear if you've noticed something different. D3DM is a must for sure.
  • Try turning on FSR. I found that it really helped with the antialiasing.
  • I found the first 5 levels quite challenging, until I got onto using orbs, skills, and the like. I played a ton of D3, but didn't play PoE1.

Aaron

First of all to my system and program of choice: I am running native PoE2(since steam version always crashed) on an M3 Max with 40 GPU cores, 64GB of RAM, using Crossover Preview.

Now, regarding my PoE2 performance:
I got it running, but there are some significant and strange issues.
First of all, regardless of whether I toggle high resolution or not, the window appears at about half my screen size, and I always have to press the “plus” button to make it fullscreen. If I try using the fullscreen option in the PoE2 menu, it crashes. Additionally, the visuals look neither sharp nor properly upscaled.
With that the cursor is almost never ingame look alike but OS styled. So almost always never visible.

Next, no matter how I configure it(in crossover preview settings to start on the second screen), the game always starts on my MacBook Pro screen when hooked up to an external monitor, even though the launcher correctly starts on the second screen. Somehow, the information doesn’t seem to apply correctly or gets overwritten very quickly.

Lastly, even though my FPS and response times are stable and consistent, the game occasionally stutters heavily or almost freezes. It’s strange because there are no FPS drops or connectivity issues during these moments.

Maybe the CrossOver team could give it the same love as they try to fix the Diablo IV options.

Today's new Preview Build notes suggested that PoE2 will now work 'out of the box' but I've noticed performance improvements as well. Fans are spinning up less now, and I enabled Vsync and Global illumination with no apparent performance penalty. The periodic hitching has improved greatly as well. Very pleased!

I'm on a M4 Pro Mac and have played POE2 successfully on 24.0.5 version of crossover. The support for controller (PS5 DualSense) was perfect. There were definite graphical glitches that were sometimes quite noticeable but was playable.

Today I tried the new preview build given the callout for native POE2 support. I ran into an issue with control button mapping in CrossOver Preview build. Notably, the R1 and the Select buttons on the DualSense controller are double mapped, e.g., holding R1 now opens the radial selection for inventory/passives etc. Pressing Select now maps to chat box control center button still does not work. Since the game does not currently enable you to remap controller buttons, this has made the game unplayable in the preview version with DualSense controller. I verified that this was an issue created since Preview build. I am playing on standalone POE2 install so I have no steam input option to overwrite the controls. I will attempt a steam install of POE2 to see if this resolves the issue.

In the short span that I was testing this, the artifacting and graphical bugs I saw in 24.0.5 are indeed much improved and the game seems to run smoother even at high definition mode (4kx2k resolution).

Editing to confirm that installing through Steam and enabling Steam Input corrects the issue under the preview build.

I don’t understand how some of you are saying the game is running flawlessly, as long as we all have the same hardware.

When playing the game on high/ultra settings, it runs at 40 FPS in Act 3, which is not acceptable for a game like this. If you enable dynamic settings, it looks terrible. So, no.

tried e/mSynice, running on eval newest build und also normal....
fsr or anything else won't get you that much win in fps so either play the game with really bad setting or dont play which ruin the game anyway.

Yes, you can play it, but it doesn’t perform as it should.

I’m using an M4 Max with 40 GPU cores, and the game doesn’t fully utilize the GPU. That’s the issue.

I still have these visual hiccups and stutters.
And I still can't get it to run in full screen mode and on the second screen.
Every time I try to switch it to full screen mode, I get errors and crashes.
Every time I try to tether it to the second screen, it doesn't work, and even when I close the “screen switch” window in the CrossOver preview, it seems to forget what I was doing before.
My fans are running the same as before.
It's very strange that some of us seem to have had different experiences.

Especially in the Ascendency Trials, when the half tranzparency comes, it freezes for 10s and ruins my run every time.
I'm not mad, just a little disappointed that it doesn't run as smoothly as I would like it to be.

I mean I rather am mad/sad about GGG not having a native version.

Best for me to share my software versions, system info, in-game settings, etc.

Mac:
MBP M4 Max 40 core, 64 GB ram
15.2 (not running Public or Dev Betas)

Bottle:
Paid Crossover user, using the Dec 20 Preview App.
Installed PoE2 via steam. All App updates applied.
Bottle settings: D3DMetal and MSync are ON, High Res Mode, Preview on
The ini file was exited to use DirectX12 before the latest Preview patch.

In game:
2056x1329
Dynamic resolution = OFF
Renderer = Directx12
FSR = ON (balanced)
Mode Fullscreen
VSync = Adaptive
Texture Filtering = 8x
Lighting = Shadows and Global Illumination
All others = High

To the previous poster, I'm seeing 60 FPS nearly locked (due to VSync) in Acts 2 and 3.

EDIT: In the more hectic combat of the Jiquani sanctum (or whatever it's called), the hitching is pretty disruptive. Not sure if it's shaders loading or what, but it certainly takes the fun out of the experience. Sounds like what @Lucas AW is noticing.

Are you still having these issues?

I now have a Lvl60 Monk and am midway through Act 3/Cruel. This play through has been much smoother than the regular campaign, which suggests to me that this is shader compilation related (I am no expert, of course).

Hello,

just jumped into the crossover world with my MacBook Pro M3 to play POE2 with my girlfriend together. So I am new to crossover at all while POE2 is on its own still early access and not even working smooth on my windows 11 PC.

Specs are MacBook Pro M3
!! 8 GB of RAM !! <- do I have to few RAM?

Back to crossover and poe2 and those hiccups. The game starts very smoothly via crossover. when you progress into the next 1-2 stages / maps its starts those hiccups or total stutters. I then figured out to close the game and reopen it in crossover for the next 2-3 stages.

its like in the old windows 98 days where you had to reboot windows 98 to get fresh RAM to use.

I think someone on YouTube mentioned that RAM leak in poe2 over one of its poe2 on Mac via crossover tutorials. Have to check that out again.

A few points:

  • Be sure to use the latest CrossOver Preview build.
  • 8 GB is very low. The stuttering you're seeing could be the mac using the SSD as RAM in a swap file. Not much can be done if this is the case. The OS, Crossover, Steam (?), and POE2 are all competing for that memory.

Good luck.
