I am glad that Diablo IV VofH works under Crossover BUT.....

The near constant freezing/slow down after transporting somewhere happens at least once every "lengthy" play session (meaning around 30 minutes).
I have gotten used to the constant "need" to have the game "updated" (false or not updates), but the freezing/slowdowns that requires many times to do a force quit just to get past it is very annoying. I assume that these issues don't occur when Diablo IV VofH is run on a Windows machine, which I refuse to go back to just to play a few Diablo games that require DirectX 12 (which Parallels still can't get to run, but that is a whole different issue), so at least Crossover/Wine allows me to play the game.
Too bad they can't resolve this annoying issue but at least I can play.

Hi Steve!

I play almost all night without this problem as I have insomnia bad... I guess my question is what are your bottle settings? I can teleport with or without a teleplatform. I can teleport to my dungeons all without a problem I'd like to help if I can maybe we can come up with a solution! What are your system specs again your bottle settings and the version of Crossover you are using? I'll do my best to help you. Just remember for full support you must submit a ticket this is just user-to-user ;) and I'm happy to try and help!

Thanks for trying.
iMac M3 chip with 16GB Ram.
Crossover app itself is run off my internal hard drive with the bottles stored on an external SSD USB-C drive plugged into the iMac via a Thunderbolt port (have always used Crossover with this setup and never had an issue before the VofH upgrade in Diablo IV).
Crossover Version 24.0.7 (24.0.7.37107)
Bottle: D3DMetal and Esync are both on, other settings off. (Separate bottles for Diablo IV, Diablo 2R and Diablo Immortal)
Latest versions of Battlenet and Diablo IV VofH
Internet connection via Fios - average wireless speed 650 Mbps.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The only real suggestion I can make for you is D IV is a large game needing a faster response time than a USB-C can give. I honestly had the same problem when I tried the initial setup it was the same as yours, b.net on the Mac games on the USB-C connected directly. The C couldn't give the bandwidth needed to fully play the game in a state that was to me stable and responsive. If you have the space try going installing D4 on your system with b.net. I know it's a large download or you can move your game to the Mac using b.net that'd be faster and make a backup of your bottle and store it on your USB-C drive I do that from time to time. Make a bottle of say just b.net and D4 in case something breaks I still have a version that works. I can tell you how to do that if you'd like. But first, if you possibly can try running D4 directly off your system. Your internet speed isn't the issue here. I have a Gigabit Spectrum line and it was still stuttery on a USB-C drive.

My specs are a MBP Max 64GB M4 and it was still doing what you are describing off of a USB drive. So I know we've both experienced this and the only variable I see besides system specs is the fact we both were trying to run off a USB-C drive.

Thanks for the suggestion and I will try either moving the bottle or doing a fresh install on the internal drive. I am surprised because (1) Diablo Immortal is almost as large an install as Diablo IV VofH (and it has the added issue of constantly being connected with other players because there is no true solo way to play) and I never had the issue before the VofH add on. But thanks for the suggestion. I will see how that works and if not I may try writing a support ticket.
Thanks again, Steve

What is the easiest way to move D4 to the internal hard drive? And will I have to move both Diablo2R and Immortal also (as I do play those occasionally. I assume I can't have two separate installs of Crossover (one for the D4 bottle and the existing one for the other two bottles).

Hi Steve, I’ll get back to you when I get home sorry for the delay. If anyone can jump in while I’m gone please by all means help Steve out :)

Thanks. No rush. Have dealt with the way it is running since the update so what is another few hours. I just have to exit the game after a few transports or entering and exiting dungeons LOL. Or I can go back to D2R or DI LOL. BTW I did send an email to support - see if they come up with any other ideas. And I understand about using an external SSD drive being "slower" but the game runs perfectly as long as I don't transport. I can run around and kill things without an issue.SMH

Hi again Steve,

I apologize for the delay the weather here has turned um snowy lol. So here's what I would do. Create a fresh b.net bottle and install D4 onto your system. I don't know anything about Immortal or how it works :( However, with D IV I think that the slow downs happen with zone shifts are I right? The game has to build out so much of the zone and characters and dialogues when you enter them. We don't notice this by walking because it's probably already cached as we get closer to that zone but teleporting is making the system hiccup for some reason. That's just my 2 cents I'm no programmer but I'm just looking at what was happening when I was having the same problem off the USB-C it was always when I teleported to a different zone or into a dungeon.

Try making a completely fresh bottle on your Mac. Then once it's built I would create a backup of that bottle and store it on your C-Drive in case you need to go back to a fresh install of D IV and b.net before tinkering. Plus you'll have a fully installed backup saving you the time of ever having to redownload D IV again ;)

Let me know if going directly from your Mac helps. It did solve my problem as I was having exactly what you are saying happen. Your bottle settings are what you want for the best D IV gameplay so those are proper just the location of the game and speed of the USB drive hmmmm yup that's all I got. Even if it doesn't work you'll have a good backup of a Diablo 4 bottle ready to be restored in case something happens to your primary bottle. I do this with those large games just as a way of saving me a headache if I bork something.

One thing I don't understand. If I follow your instructions, won't the new bottle also be installed on the external SSD drive just like the other four bottles I currently have created? I don't see anyway of telling Crossover to put just that one bottle on the internal hard drive. I do see under settings to change the location of bottles BUT I assume if I use that, the app will no longer see the existing bottles that are on the external drive, unless I am missing that option of where to install and look for only new bottles.
Thanks for your help and patience.

My C.O. defaults to the internal drive as I don't know how to change that. For example with my Steam bottle steam is installed on the HD and all my games are installed on the external USB-C drive (through settings in Steam), then when I want to play a more intensive game I move it to the internal drive using the tools in Steam> Storage section.

I would just put the games (D IV / D II) but this wasn't working without the error you are happening in IV. let me try to build a bottle for you while you try installing it to the default location. :) It just won't have Diablo 4 installed as I Don't know to to make one that installs on its own and not my b.net account. You try the standard install I'll build you a bottle with b.net in it and maybe when you double-click to install it then it will ask where to put it. I just always default internal with D IV due to the size of the game and requirements.

I've made your bottle of just b.net here.

It should automatically install on your system. You will need a program to unzip this as the standard program that comes with MacOS doesn't know how to properly extract it. Grab an unzipper called "The Unarchiver" from the app store it's free I've been using it for well over a decade. Unzips everything intact. Let me know when you have it so I can remove it from my G Drive :) Then we can work from there. Let me know where it installs I have it set to use the internal drive by default. I didn't change any options.

I apologize for the double post. I'm going to create a duplicate of my D IV internal drive bottle, move Diablo I V to my USB-C drive, and play off of that to see if it's still giving me the same problem you are having then can compare apples to apples. (as much as we can have different hardware) ;) It's copying now.

Is it possible you can join their Discord and then DM me my name on there is James it's a maroon color for being a better tester. Then we can try to troubleshoot in real-time and not need to fill up the forum.

I tried installing a new copy of Crossover on the internal drive but it automatically picked up the bottles on the external drive. I then changed the settings within Crossover to install bottles on the internal drive but it failed several times to first install Battlenet and then the actual install of DIV stalled also. It also caused an issue with my other Crossover app that was entirely on the external drive so I just deleted the new installation and reset my original Crossover. Everything is now back to the way it was and I tried changing the visual quality within the game itself to see if that helps. I also wrote to tech support to see if they have any ideas but have not heard yet.
Anyway thanks for trying to help.

Steven,

I'm so sorry we couldn't get it working. I fell asleep during the installation of D IV. I'm trying it now because I want to know if it's just the USB-C Drive causing the issue. You mentioned you submitted a support ticket. I'm sure they will get you sorted. I again am sorry we couldn't get a proper install on your system directly that doesn't make any sense to me.

So Far my findings:

  1. The game is taking forever to load off of the USB-C Drive I'm at the windows where it's connecting and the gates are there.
  2. Graphics sorta stutter on screen with characters but catch up just fine I'm playing at my normal settings of everything cranked up and hi-res mode selected in my bottle
  3. Ok now the game is loaded my sorceress has a ton of speed on her gear and she's movin!
  4. Teleporting is slow and I mean super slow
  5. Must play off the internal drive (at least I do I can't do the long load times) I've played for about 15 min trying to warp all over but most of that time is spent on loading screens.

For me, for this game to be playable at an enjoyable speed it's gotta play off the system. I struggle with the load times. I have my USB-C Drive hooked up directly to the port on my Mac so it's not in my USB-C Hub that also has my time machine drive on it which wouldn't work as the hub is powered by the port.

I feel bad we couldn't get the same thing happening but I know they will get you sorted! Please post here if you wouldn't mind what the problem is so that in the future if anyone else has it I might be able to help. I enjoy learning all I can about this software!

Hi James
My issues when it runs off the external SSD drive (aside when teleporting which does t show up till after I teleport/enter-exit dungeons several times are nothing like yours. Granted I don’t run the game in high res mode and didn’t even download the high res files. But I don’t see what you are seeing - only after a few transports.
But thanks again. Did get an email confirming that I sent the issue. We shall see.

CodeWeavers wrote back. They suggested using MSync instead of ESync. I made the switch (and even put my graphic settings back where they were before) and played for about 15-20 minutes or so - and made sure to transport several time LOL - and never had the slow-down/freeze up issue. So perhaps this solves my issue. Keeping fingers crossed that that is the last of it (aside from the "updates" that are still screwed up happening too often.
Thanks, Steve

Hey Steve! I did the same but remember the game is installed on my Mac. It increased my frame rate dramatically! I don't know why I didn't think of the obvious mega facepalm. Bu they now we both got something out of your ticket! My monitor is a 180hz and my necromancer runs faster than a mounted character! Now it's not a big glitchy here or there! She ZOOOOMMMSSS!!! So thanks Steve for sharing that information!!!

Well I played for well over an hour. Did intentionally lots of transports. Didn’t have an issue till over an hour in when I transported into a town and it happened. Ah well. Better than it has been.

Hey Steve,

I've been doing great with no lag and full framerates but again installed it on the MBP. I was going from the Pit to different dungeons/towns/storylines and characters for about 2-3 hours I lost track of time and no problems here. Want me to set up a USB-C and try it with these settings tonight just to see if we have the same problem? Also, respond to their ticket and let them know!

Thanks for the offer but not necessary. The fact that their one change made it much better than it was - and that was doing much more transporting than I usually do - is sufficient for you not to bother.
I will respond to their email.
Steve

Hi James
Just an update. I switched back to Esync from Msync (because it seemed much more stable for me). However I did reduce my video quality to Medium (from High) and have had very few issues - including a play session this morning and yesterday evening of about an hour each with several transports and entry and exiting dungeons (both by walking out and using the wheel settings to exit from deep in a dungeon). Don't know if it will continue to work but for me (and my older eyes) the difference between high (without High Res Mode) and Medium shows no significant difference in the quality.

Hey Steve!

Glad things are working for you! I noticed in CO 25.3b that Ray Tracing is an option. One of them when I had a PC when this game came out helped me see better as the vegetation was easily lit up. I tried it but it killed my game's playability.

I suffer from insomnia so I played for about 5 hours last night non-stop since reading didn't put me to sleep nor did meditation, gaming I went in D3D/ESync, and yup played perfectly! I'm very happy with the results and I'm really happy you are as well! Time to go to Sanctuary!

Later!

James
