Every time I try to install WoW, it looks like it is going to launch, changes video settings and crashes my session.
This is the demo client of wow?...if so, I just installed
it here, COG 7.2.2 + this linux box (true_multilib) + a
nvidia gs8600 with nvidia drivers (v185.18.14), and the
only thing 'different' I may have done, is that I routinely
have to go cxbottlemanager->manage bottles->create new
bottle winxp profile->add/remove->click on new bottle->
configure->control panel->winecfg->graphics - turn on
emulate virtual desktop->ok->back to add/remove tab->
install software...and make sure you install into the
bottle just created (I have to do this to avoid messing up
my twinview setup if the installer wants to go fullscreen)
Perhaps you need windowed mode just to install it..not sure
The installer popped a window containing the eula text,
rendered as lines of tiny squares...I actually bailed at
that point, went back and installed the core fonts and
tried again...same result. Being prepared to accept the
terms and conditions as spelled out by those little squares,
I tried to click on 'accept', and get a pc-speaker beep...not
accepting mouse input, so try the tab key...nothing happens,
so just hit enter & hope...the installer proceeds okay (;
At some stage it popped a tiny non informative error window
which quickly gets covered up by another screen just as you
go to click on it's OK button -- hidden in the background,
this error window will appear later on in the installation
process, and then you can click on it's ok button to dismiss
it (no idea what it is, but it seems to be non critical..)
During the install, it asks where you want to put the data
files, and pops a file requester displaying the contents
of your homedir..(as opposed to the wine drive_c tree)..and,
like many other installers like it, it doesn't see . files
and so you can't navigate into your .cxgames/bottle_name path
to put the stuff about to be downloaded into the bottle itself.
So...I just chose a directory in my home dir, and let it have
at it...(note: I must triage this later...I tried the 'make
new directory' thang in the file requester, and although it
didn't error, it didn't seem to have created the dir either..)
Then it will go into these stages of appearing like it may
have crashed while it's busy in the background downloading
files....clicking on the create new character button does
the same thing...you'd swear blind the thing's locked-up,
but just wait, it'll come back to you...
Entering the game (realm) itself for the first time, will
also invoke a download of runtime files...again, it will
seem like it's died for many minutes, and here after it
completed this task, I had a "you have been disconnected
from the server" window....shutdown the game, restart it
again, login in, no problems...actually seems to run fairly
well...
