If you are trying to install AoE from the original disks, make absolutely sure you say "yes" when it asks if you want to install DirectX.
You would think it would give some sort of error if it was missing, but nope, it just sort-of runs with everything in the display being black.

When things like that happen, rather than starting over with the install you can usually correct the issue by installing "DirectX for Modern Games" into your bottle.
