DX?...do you mean directx? If so, yes...crossover games/wine does support many
(as yet not all) directx functions. You can install directx with cxinstallwizard
(tick 'show all service packs and dependencies' and it will be in the list of
targets)....however....what you describe may be related to something else. It
would be helpful if you told us exactly which games are doing this for you (the
black screen issues), and also what platform/OS/videocard you're using..
Cheers!
The more direct issue are applications that try to open a DirectX screen. Some that are "in a window" type apps and others that go fullscreen. These programs are not games, but applications.
One of note is WinUAE, a very good Amiga emulator. The current release version works in Crossover for Games because the program allows for an "OpenGL" filter to be used in its emulation. Sadly the author of WinUAE does not have the time to continue debugging OpenGL and DX code. So he's going full DirectX for his next release. No more OpenGL filters.
So I am trying to see if there are solutions.
Again, you've failed to indicate what platform/OS/videocard you're using,
so it's hard to make meaningful comments here -- wine's directx supports
are always on the improve and getting better. It's good you chose WinUAE
as an example, because I always tend to keep that installed....
...so, a comment about WinUAE for my setup (linux/nvidia videocard & drivers),
is that it runs pretty much just as well using either directx or opengl
(using the Sounds of the Gnome musicdisk as a testcase) filters, and to
the point here, the directx filter works considerably better with COG-8.0
compared to how it used to work with previous releases of crossover-games.
(in fact, pretty much all my games showed some improvement in the COG-8.0
release wrt directx rendering)
Cheers!
I am on a MacBook with OSX running CoG. WinUAE, at least in OSX, does not display anything if a DX screen (filter) is selected. This seems to be the case for many applications. Although oddly not games. It just will not display DX graphics content in non-game programs.
Actually, quite a few games require being run in opengl mode on
the Mac as well, so it's not just apps. Also, there are many games
that will do the blackscreen (or whitescreen) thing when using the
directx rendering, which can be worked around by using regedit to
set various values in the windows like register wine provides. As
far as I know, a lot of this has to do with the MacOSX port of X11,
and/or the video chipset/drivers being used on that platform.
Likewise, winecfg can sometimes be employed to change the wine setup
(for example, emulate a virtual desktop) and/or modify dll overrides
to get things to work when directx issues are involved.
Cheers!
Whoa..my brain hurts now. But I do thank you for the information.
