Steam demos not working

So I've been running steam using crossover. All of my orange box games seem to work great but when i download a demo from the steam store nothing happens when i try to launch the game.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard

It depends entirely on the demo - like the full games in Steam, themselves, some work and some don't. Can you advise as to which demos you've tried?

Trine demo: Dialog box says it's preparing to launch but nothing happens.

Mini ninjas demo: Dialog box pops up saying that it encountered a serious problem and then crashes steam.

Machinarium demo: Makes the screen white and forces a force quit.

I was considering purchasing some of these games but since their demos aren't working I have decided not to until I hear otherwise.

Well for Trine, download the demo apart from Steam, and make a new bottle for it, it actually works pretty well. And Machinarium has a Mac demo.

Mini Ninja is listed as "Known Not to Work" - http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name?app_id=6216

But it does appear to work on the latest version of Wine (Linux): http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=17676

So odds are you will see better support/functionality for it at some point in a future release.

The one thing worth pointing out, if it's not already evident, is that all Orange Box games -- all current Valve games, really -- are running on the Source Engine. That is relatively supported so that's why all those games work. But every third party game on Steam is free to use whatever engine they like, so support is on an individual basis. Steam is just a distribution engine.
