Hello I am using macOS Ventura 13.4 and I have downloaded the latest trial version of CrossOver and Steam. Unfortunately Steam does not work and it shows a black screen for the login window. I did try a lot of workarounds I have found on reddit and youtube but nothing has worked. Unfortunately this is very frustating and a blocker for me. I cannot proceed buying CrossOver until this will be resolved.
I've noticed this for the past couple days. It used to be I could launch my game with one click on it's app shortcut in the Dock but that doesn't work. I can't tell you what works but I've done things like reinstall steam, simulate restart, quit crossover, try again, sometimes up to 10-15 minutes of playing around until I could get a login where I have to two-factor in again. I come back to it the next day and I have to go through all of this fumbling around again. Steam itself looks different so I suspect that and doubt it is changes in macOS 13.4.
We apologize for the troubles with Steam after the latest Steam client update. Our team is hard at working looking into a fix, but in the meantime, this is what worked for me: when Steam starts, there are two icons in the dock: one for Steam, and one for steamwebhelper. If you select steamwebhelper and go to the Mac menu bar and quite steamwebhelper, Steam will relaunch and work.
On the bright side, this seems to be working much better on the CrossOver 23 nightlies, and we plan on going to beta for 23 relatively soon :)
As always, I highly recommend submitting a ticket, and you'll get updates when they're available.
I can't get Steam working on my M2 on Ventura 13.4.1 either.
Most of the time it won't open at all, not even to a black screen. Sometimes have a black screen and rarely it just opens up and works (very, very laggy though). If it opens up the games I want to play don't work. Dwarf Fortress for example creates a heavy error that shuts down everything. Weird thing: if it opens to a black screen and I close Steam it will open again and again and again or just don't close (but without a window)
I tried almost every fix I could find online... nothing worked so far. At least not reliably.
If anyone is having trouble, you just have to be persistent. It's janky, but sometimes it takes quitting steamwebhelper multiple times before it works without a blank screen. So when the blank window pops up, press opt-cmd-q to quit it, or go up to the top left menu and select quit. It will try to reload it automatically. After a few times, usually around three or more times doing this, Steam will load up. I'm running Ventura 13.4.1.
Here is where I'm at right now. It opens like 3% of the time. When I try to launch it it either opens and closes immediately or it opens and nothing happens. The install went kinda smoothly, after installing it like 3 times I finally got a login window.
If I quit CrossOver fully there are a lot off wine64-preloader processes in Activity Monitor that will not quit when I quit CrossOver. Sometimes Steam also doesn't quit. I've been tinkering with this now for hours and I'm no where. How is the rating for this app "runs well"?
M2 Pro 13.4.1 (22F82) CrossOver Version 22.1.1 (22.1.1.35679)
The rating for for Steam "runs well" is because Steam usually does run well. As far as I know, a CrossOver update is underway which will most likely fix the issues currently plaguing the Steam app.
One more thing for those having issues, try opting into the Steam beta once you're able to get into Steam. I've found that whatever they did in the beta branch makes it appear much more reliably if you're having issues on Ventura.
