Greetings!

I've come across a new image encoding that's crashing Powerpoint 2010 and won't display in Powerpoint 2016 under Crossover 17.1 for Linux.

When going to Google images, these images save with the .jpg filename extension. But, if you try to import them into Powerpoint 2010, it immediately crashes.

I do a file on these "bad" images and they show as:

$ file ROS-by-Example.jpg
ROS-by-Example.jpg: RIFF (little-endian) data, Web/P image

However, a "normal" jpeg looks like:

$ file PR2-robot.jpeg
PR2-robot.jpeg: JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01, aspect ratio, density 1x1, segment length 16, baseline, precision 8, 183x275, frames 3

What are these RIFF format images and why do they save as .jpg?

As for Powerpoint 2016, the image doesn't cause it to crash. But, I do get a "This image cannot currently be displayed" message. At least it doesn't crash.

If I try to import the same image into Powerpoint 2010 under windows, I get the same message as Powerpoint 2016. Again, it doesn't crash the application unlike what it does for Powerpoint 2010 under Crossover.

Any clue as to what's going on here that causes it to crash the program? I'm OK with it not displaying. But, the crashing has lost me a lot of work.

That's one of those WebP format images. If you change the extension from .jpg to .webp you'll still be able to view the image in Nautilus or a Web browser. They aren't Office compatible. They are mostly intended for Web use along with their video equivalent WebM.

OK, Thanks. But, the problem is that it crashes Powerpoint 2010 rather than simply saying it doesn't support it. So, I'm guessing I'm going to need to start examining the format of every picture before I import it. Sigh...
