TF2 and CXG just keeps getting worse!

TF2 with games 8.1.3. Why in the world will it NOT remember my graphics setting now?!?! I change them in game and that is the last screen I see! The music starts playing over and mouse overs even make a noise but the screen is frozen! What changed now? I went from sub standard graphics to frozen! Where can I set the video options manually like cfg file or something? It's been so long since needing do something like this I can't remember how or if tf2 even can be done! Hopefully you can help me as a support ticket takes way too long or normally isn't solved. end of rant...
MBP ATI X1600 2gb ram core 2 2.16 (lean mean mediocre machine)!

Thanks

update:
it will only start in 1024x768... fixed that by setting -w1280 -h 800 but the screen will not refresh after apply changes... The auto setting for my system as it claims nets me a whopping 20fps!

Now I tried this tip and nothing changed... Team Fortress 2 FPS Increase

Do you have a -dxlevel switch in the startup options? Try to remove it. It resets the graphics settings to default every start. Once you start the game with -dxlevel XX once it will remember the dxlevel and stick to it even when you remove the parameter - until you pass in a different -dxlevel YY.

I will try that after work! I have always left it there before with out issues but I will try that! Would that cause the screen to freeze while everything was still running in the background? That's my main issue. But forgetting to remove the dx flag would explain always resetting options.

Also does TF2 crash when you click exit instead of closing properly? If this is the case it will not remember any settings you might have saved.

Not removing the dxversion argument shouldn't make the game crash, no. But if it's crashing it may help to use dxlevel 81 instead of 90 or 95.

If it is crashing on exit(a bug that should be fixed) it may help to use backbuffer offscreen rendering instead of FBOs.

Removing the DX flag now works to keep my settings :)!!! Perfect! Now then... I hear that the beta CXG helps undo what 10.6 did to our ATI based machines! Is this true? If so how do I get it?!? Since 10.6 day of defeat barely runs smooth enough to play! Also I would really like to get your input on verticalsync. Should I use it? Or just cap my fps at 60? Thanks for the help so far!

EDIT: Okay TF2 works again! but I still get terrible fps at lowest settings! inside a building with nothing going on I can hit 60 but outside or action and I am at 19... NOT playable! In boot camp I can get decent fps at medium so I figure then transfer layer will cut that a bit but... wow 10.6 drivers are this bad? It seems a bit worse then 10.5, which I am close to going back to if I can't get this working right. So I need some fps help if anyone is willing! Any way I can get at least 30 min? Thanks for your time again!

The slowness is just a result from the Wine software - most all games currently run fast natively in Windows.

However you might want to look into an FPS optimization for TF when running it under CXGames to make it run a bit better (thats what I do on Ubuntu anyways). There are many different ones out there (just google "Tf2 fps cfg") for example here is a decent one

I will try that config next. Would you recommend the dual core cpu version or not? The author claimed it was broken but that was in May of 2008. Is it fixed and would you recommend it?

You mention in your first post that you're running CX games 8.1.3. Have you had a chance to give 8.1.4 a shot? This build has a few more ATI fixes in it (as well as more L4D2 fixes). You'll find it in your My Account>My Downloads>Unsupported Downloads section on our website.

I have not tried the Beta yet. I have high hopes though when I get that chance! I am trying to hold out until the next MBP refresh and it looks like I might make it thanks to all the help here! If you guys can get around the 10.6 ATI killing "feature" that would be amazing! Has any one tried the dual core cpu setting in there configs? Is it still broken or working now?

Well I tried that config and the only thing it did was bring me full circle back to crashing and setting dx at 9.... What the... using that and even setting dx back to 8 wouldn't help the config always reset it back to 9 and settings to high!!! ARGHHHH! Next step is beta.

Come to think of it it didn't echo it loaded but it sure did mess up my settings!

EDIT: Tried the beta and dropped my res which still is not playable... It is much closer but the fps drop makes it not worth it. Even worse my DoD performance has tanked! DoD is my main goal if you have any ideas I am desperate! Looks like I might have to give up on steam with my MBP...

would you mind sending in a support ticket for this issue so we can track this more closely?

I will but it seems my MBP is just too old now a days to cope with the extra layer.
