Steam installs fine. Against the storm installs fine.
Launch Against the Storm > it opens and the opening logos and stuff work fine > music is working fine > the loading spinner comes up and never stops spinning, it never gets past that.
I checked the forums and someone was able to get it running in late 2022 (though it would crash after 30 minutes sometimes).
The gist of the issue was that the game fails to load because it's trying to cleanup files that don't exist, so you have to create them for it to load up. Takes a wee while to get it working, but once you do, it's seamless.
So mine had all those files except CustomGamesLayout_Backup.save, so I created that file and then launched crossover all fresh, then steam, then ran the game from steam. Unfortunately it still hangs on the loading spinner.
Where are you reading logs from?
(Also, note for your instructions, they say to find those files in /Eremite Games, but they should be in /Eremite Games/Against the Storm.)
GOT IT WORKING CONSISTENTLY! (however, it's not clear if it's always saving my maps, but that's a worry for the future)
So I deleted all the files in /Against the Storm, and when you run it it recreates them. I don't remember the sequence of getting stuck on loading spinners, but whether it's the very first spinner, or one that starts after you start a match, or one that starts after the Newgate cutscene, the solution is always the same:
View /Users/username/Library/Application\ Support/CrossOver/Bottles/Steam/drive_c/users/crossover/AppData/LocalLow/Eremite\ Games/Against\ the\ Storm/Player.log and scroll to the bottom, and find a line that starts with IO and mentions a .save file, like this: IOException: Unknown error (0x17045c0) : 'C:\users\crossover\AppData\LocalLow\Eremite Games\Against the Storm\MetaSave_Backup.save'
Whatever .save file it mentions, create it in /Users/username/Library/Application\ Support/CrossOver/Bottles/Steam/drive_c/users/crossover/AppData/LocalLow/Eremite\ Games/Against\ the\ Storm. This is done most easily with the terminal, by cding to that directory, then just creating a new file each time using touch (for example, touch WorldSave_Backup.save).
Close the game, then run it again. (protip: you can close the game—assuming it's fullscreen—by clicking away from it on another monitor which will bring up the top bar menu, then selecting the app's name and choosing Quit Against the Storm)
Keep doing that until it no longer stops at a spinner.
I'm glad to hear you got it working in the end! It took me quite a few attempts with creating the files in order to get it work properly, so I apologise if my instructions were unclear. I had the same nervousness with the save files disappearing... but it seems okay to me. I think for the first cycle of gameplay or so the state isn't saved correctly, but beyond that it comes right and everything just works. I must have about 16 hours in game now.
I've modified the tip on the game to be more specific, and included some of the additional information you provided. Thank you for coming back and providing this!
Have fun!
