Age of Empires 3 .tmp or Msxml 4.0 error at startup

Hello, I have emailed the the info service about this, but have not gotten a response and I cannot file a ticket because I am not going to purchase the program until I know AOE3 will work. Here is my email...

"I asked about AOE3 earlier but I finally got the game to install after trying again following all the steps i've found on wine and crossover websites. Now the game is installed but it will not start. I get a program error saying the program _____.tmp has encountered a serous problem and needs to close. Then it says it was caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in wine. I've tried everything I can. When I use a fixed exe I get an error about msxml 4.0. I have tried updating to 1.12 and with the original version. I also have launched from the CD, an Iso, and the actual file on my bottle. Any ideas? Thanks."

I am running a Macbook pro 13" purchased in Sept. 2009. I will add the log but I am not sure what to post or how to find it.

My AOE3 is legal and was installed from CDs that I put in one folder in my Bottle.

I got all the dll files as well as 13codecx.ax
I also installed Msxml 4.0 and c++ runtime 6.0

(I have spent 6+ hours researching and have not found anything that works).

This was my install process.

  1. Create new bottle with WinXP
  2. Add .dll files from CD's to system 32 as well as mfc42.dll, quartz.dll, d3dx9_25.dll, 13codecx.ax
  3. I installed msxmicab.exe, msxml.msi (for Msxml 4.0), and C++ runtime 6.0
  4. I then installed the game from a folder located in my bottle that included all three CD's
  5. I changed the cdpath to d:/ using reg edit.
  6. I tried to launch but failed with the program error listed above.
  7. I updated to version 1.12 with a patch file.
  8. I tried to launch again but failed with the same error.
  9. I used a fixed exe and received the Msxml 4.0 error.

let me know if you have any ideas or need more info, thanks!
Thank you!

Hi,

This title incorporates disc based DRM, but I figure you already knew this

This is possibly why you haven't seen any answer to your query -- sorry, but
you're pretty much on your own when it comes to things like this. Situation
is pretty much spelled out on the AOE3 C4 page as well ;

Cheers!

Alex
