I recently migrated from an older (silver key) MacBook Pro to a newer unibody MacBook Pro. I had previously been able to use CrossOver Games to play Lord of the Rings On-Line just fine on the old MacBook Pro. However, I can not get LOTRO to run on the new MacBook Pro.
The specific problem is after the first splash screen comes up (full screen wraith on a flying dragon) the screen goes black. I never hear any sound or get any indication that the game is loading. I am using PyLotRO as the launcher. I have tried all the usual tricks including setting an HKEY for the video memory (256MB), not using the 9600GT graphics card, using a mouse instead of the trackpad.
Here are the specifics about each MacBook Pro
New
Macbook Pro Unibody 4GB RAM 2.66 GHz Core 2 Due
Snow Leapord 10.6.2
9400M Graphics Card 256MB
9600MGT Graphics Card 256MB
Crossover Games 8.4.1
Old Macbook Pro (silver keys) 4GB RAM 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
Leapord 10.5.8
8600M GT Graphics Card
Crossover Games 8.4.1
I notice that the old MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 indicates that the graphics card uses Quartz Extreme. There is no mention of Quartz Extreme on the new unibody MacBook Pro using OS 10.6.2.
Apple X11 is installed on the new unibody MacBook Pro
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I had been very pleased with playing LOTRO uding CrossOver Games and look forward to getting it up and running on the new MacBook Pro.
Hmmm... I had a similar string of issues with my MacBook Pro. [ # MacBook Pro4.1 Core 2 Duo [2.5GHz - 4GB 667] OS X 10.6.2]
I have both an iMac and the Pro... I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard on the iMac and from CXG 7 to 8 and to PyLOtro with zero problems.
However, on the MacBook Pro I had a whole string of issues.
To make a long story short, the difference between the two was that the iMac had a "clean" OSX environment, that is to say almost no "non-professional" software. The MacBook on the other hand had been used extensively for all kinds of "multi-media" stuff and consequently had a large number of "random" video players, audio players and the like installed on it. (I never did manage to find WHICH application was causing the problem, but it was ultimately clear that some application/add-on had installed/done something that was not quite legitimate and impacted other software.)
When I did a disk wipe and re-install of 10.6 all of the issues with CXG and LOTRO disappeared.
BTW, once the splash screen comes up, PyLOtro is "done" and the Turbine client is in control.
I presently have (in CXG) control pannels/graphics -- only "Allow the window manager to decorate the windows" and "Allow Pixel Shader" checked and "vertex shader support" set to "hardware" on both my iMac and MacBook Pro. And yes, I run in windowed mode all the time (all though that window is nominally "full screen" -- but window size is set by CXG and the Mac, not by LOTRO.
Thanks for the reply. Strangely enough, I have exactly the opposite configuration. The new unibody MacBook Pro came with Snow Leopard installed. I don't have any third party software installed that was not on my older MacBook Pro, in fact I have less installed, primarily Perian and MacFuse, and Onyx. So, I guess I am hosed for now. Hopefull, CrossOver Games 9 will be better.
Don't know which one (or both) made the critical difference, but who cares at this problem.
I recommend that this be posted to the tricks and traps page.
