TF2 crashes to desktop after selecting class- any suggestions welcome please

Hi,

Any advice on this topic would be very much welcome.

After the update (27 Jan 2010), TF2 now crashes to desktop after I select a class, effectively when I try to 'start playing' the sound loops for a few seconds and crashes to desktop with no error message. I have no problem joining any server or map, the intro screens or even being spectator is fine.

It always crashes in the same place, and I have tried a variety of things. I think its TF2 specific as CS:S still plays fine.

I am running CrossOver Games 8.1.4 with an quad core i5 27inch imac (ATI Radeon HD 4850 512mb) with Snow Leopard.

I have tried making a number of changes to the launch options, such as different dx levels, no sound, limiting fps etc to no avail. Before the update, I used
-width 2560 -height 1440 -novid -dxlevel 90 without any problems.
I have tried turning all the video settings down as well, but that hasn't worked, plus the game still works on my Macbook with much lower processing power anyway.

I have downloaded and reinstalled all of the local game content, but before I did that verified integrity of the game cache and it was fine. I have also repaired the HDD permissions with OSX. I have had a look at all the crossover and TF2 threads I can find regarding the game crashing however I haven't been able to find anything that may help with this specific issue. I am hoping that since the crash is always in the same, very specific place, someone who knows more about how the game works might have an idea about what I could try.

Thanks.

I wish I could help, but I have the exact same problem on almost the same setup (27 inch iMac, i7, ATI Radeon HD 4850). I am so far unable to run TF2 in full resolution, but it runs fine in standard resolution (1024x768, I think). Of course, that's unacceptably ugly on such a large screen (the pixels become huge), but it gives me hope that this problem may have a solution. I will report back as soon as I find one!

Perhaps try NOT doing full screen. go windowed and save your computer some pain. (those computers are nice but fullscreen full res may be pushing it too far....)

Windowed playing is just a far less enjoyable experience. Team Fortress 2 works flawless in Bootcamp, in 2560x1440 with everything maxed, so it would be a shame not to take advantage of its capabilities.

I don't suppose it's possible to install other graphics drivers within a bottle? I think that might be a solution, but I havn't found a way to do it yet.

thanks for that information. having now tried a variety of resolutions i know that its only w2560 h1440 that seems to make it crash, so i now have a useful work around.

it doesn't make any sense why it would work for 3 months fine, then suddenly one day stop working, but at least now it doesn't matter why.

thanks

Is this over Steam? There's been several Steam updates where they've "broken" some games and Crossover had to play catch up.

yes, this is over steam, and i think i was a bit hasty before with the solution. now i can play the game (i.e. it doesn't crash as soon as i select a class), but now it crashes as soon a i press 'tab' to view the players list.

Crashing when showing multiplayer score is unfortunately a new bug that got introduced with a recent TF2 update.

I didn't get this particular bug with Crossover Games 8.1.4, but it got some new random crashes which probably are related.

ahh, that makes sense then, thanks. I guess I was facing more than one problem. I just hope I only have the 'multiplayer score' bug remaining, and soon there will be an update to fix that.
