Why is Add Duplicate not recommended?

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/forums/general/?t=27;msg=97228
This is the second or third time I've heard the advice 'don't use Add Duplicate'. I've received the same advice in the IRC channel (multiple times) and read it in another forum post.

Up until recently I have been using Add Duplicate quite extensively and until I started trying to install Global Agenda I have not had problems.

When I first got Crossover Games I set up a WinXP Bottle with some basic runtime support components and used Add Duplicate to create a new Bottle when I am ready to install a new game. This worked for Spectromancer, Lord of the Rings Online, Iris Online, and Runes of Magic. It did not work for Guild Wars but Guild Wars does not seem to work on WinXP so I created a new Win2000 Bottle for Guild Wars.

If Add Duplicate should not be used what about Add from Archive? If I create an Archive of my base WinXP Bottle and use that archive as my base would that work better?

There is no reason not to use Add Duplicate or Add from Archive. They are there to be used! 😊

It may be overkill to set up a big bottle full of pre-installed runtime support components and then routinely use that as a base for installing games. Usually, runtime support components are either helpful or at least not harmful. However, it is possible that in some cases they might worsen compatibility with a specific program rather than improving it. So, just keep that in mind when testing new games.
