Cannot run any Windows Games...

I have installed many windows games using both CrossOver Mac and CrossOver Games. All of the games I have installed have installed successfully, but when I attempt to run them, I am met with the error message "(Blank) has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. No other applications are effected." I thought this was a problem with CrossOver at first, so I checked the compatability database, and found none of the games I had attempted to install (MVP Baseball 2003, Madden 08, or Fifa 06.) So I installed Microsoft Train Simulator, a game with a silver ranking in the compatibility database, (meaning it should run very functionally), and encountered the same problem. Is this a problem with the computer, and how can I fix this?

The error message also says "This may be caused by a problem in the program or a defeciancy in Wine. You may want to check codeweavers.com/compatibility for tips about running this application."

Hi there,

Just cross checking the C4 database here, those titles you example
are all in that list of win32 apps that no-one has tried yet. You
probably already surmised as much and headed for MSTS instead (I saw
your other posting in that forum) based on it's silver ranking as
a 'cross check' as it were.

The error you are seeing means the win32 exe and/or the wine engine
have crashed for one or another reason -- just why is another matter
again. Typically speaking, medal rankings tend to be somewhat tenuously
linked to which platform/OS/videocard you happen to be using, and so it
is possible for a silver ranked app to exist that is known not to work
on other hardware/OS combinations...

Regarding MSTS ...I know Julian was active recently iirc, so I'll let
him handle that if/when he surfaces. Two of the games you mention here,
there are C4 entries for...see and note these are 'untested' ;

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=3716

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=7577

For the benefit of future users with these same titles, it would be
really really useful if you might consider posting to the forum on
the above two pages? Just like you have done with MSTS more or less,
however it is important that you mention the following information;

Exactly which version(s) of Crossover you are using

What platform/OS{version/videocard/chipset you have

Just knowing you're on Mac isn't enough ;)

I'll be sure to notice the new threads on those pages and pick them
up from there -- the reason I ask this, is technically speaking, any
solution/information helpful to one app, might not apply to the other,
so I don't want to 'bury' any information about two different apps
in this thread. The other alternative is to have a look over at wineHQ
AppDB -- a lot of the time there's useful information in those entries
that a lot of the time are also applicable in the crossover situation;

http://appdb.winehq.org/

You can search for your problematic apps over there ; if the entry there
for these titles is ranked as 'garbage' or subject to bugs and/or other
caveats, that will most likely be why you're having trouble with it in
crossover as well. For reference, the current crossover 9.1 releases are
based on the wine-1.2 build tree.

Hope this helps....

Cheers!

Thanks so much! I will definitely post my information on the forums you suggested, and I'll try the rest of your advice.
Thanks again!

One more question...I checked out the Wine database, and it says that some of the titles I mentioned will run with Wine 1.1.17. If i download this version, is it possible that it will give different results than CX 9.1, or will I encounter the same problem?

Hi,

Now that I know you've got a gma950 video chipset (see my fifa06 post)
the answer is "probably no, it won't help" -- WineHQ (and the AppDB)...
..unless otherwise clearly stated...usually are very linuxcentric wrt test
results and other comments posted there. There is Mac content as well, but
most of it relates to linux. What it is useful for though is to establish
what (if any) other dependencies an app might need and/or indicate some
other wine tweak that can also be used in Crossover too....or if indeed
the game has a winebug which is also present in Crossover as well.

If the app isn't bugged in WineHQ and known to work in wine-1.2 then it
should work in CXG-9.1 but sometimes some benevolent Crossover patch
which helps many other titles in CXG can break some other apps at the
same time. More than likely though, it's the GMA 950 you're battling with
here...not so much with Crossover/wine perse...

Cheers!
