CrossOver is slowwwwww - but only in main user

Dear Sirs

I have installed the demo version of CrossOver Mac 10.0.1 (today, yesterday I was trying with 10.0.0 with the same results) in my MacBook Pro Snow Leopard 10.6.6 (originally upgraded from Leopard 10.5).

What happens is that all attempts to install or use an installed bottle takes forever and is very, very slow. Yesterday it took over 2 hours to install a IE6 on a new bottle... and any attempt to use that bottle takes a long time to have it available for use (it just says Scanning..."). wineloader processes take 90% of CPU and more than 20 minutes to complete.

I have tried to see if there were other people with the same issue and someone, somewhere, was talking about similar problems, that did not happen when creating a fresh user on his mac and then install and use windows/wine applications in that user. In the situation I was reading, it was something about fonts. I tried to do the same and, surprise, it happens to me too. Crossover runs perfectly in the new user... (and, as far I can see, there are no differences between the 2 users regarding fonts).

I need help in understanding how to solve this, as I am trying to use any Internet Explorer version (6, 7, ... 8) to access my work intranet applications which only work with IE javascript /.NET . I would prefer not having to start up my Parallels Desktop Win7 virtual machine just for that.

Thanks in advance.

Rob

My guess is that your main user account was migrated from another Mac using Apple's Migration Assistant. Is that correct?

If so, your user's home folder may have unusual ownership and permissions. That doesn't affect most programs, but CrossOver operates on a lower level than most programs and seems to be affected. We haven't nailed down exactly why, yet.

The remedies are described in this article in our support library.

First, thanks for your reply.

I forgot to add the following information to my original post. I have checked already for any problems on ownership and permissions, by using "ls -ld@e ~", and I have not identified any issue.

On Disk Utility I have verified the disk permissions, there are some issues listed (which I cannot solve, I don't know why), but I don't thing that's where the problems are:

Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Classes/jconsole.jar", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home/lib", should be 95, user is 0.
User differs on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Libraries", should be 95, user is 0.
Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/libdeploy.jnilib", should be -rwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Permissions differ on "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls", should be drwxrwxr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .
Permissions differ on "Library/Application Support/Apple/ParentalControls/ALRHelperJobs", should be drwxrwxr-x , they are drwxr-xr-x .

Anyway, I runned "sudo chown -R <username> ~<username>", and everything remained the same.

Regarding the user migration, no, I have not migrated any previous mac and not used the tool you mention. I did, however, had some issues some time in the past when I changed my mac administrative user from one account to another (first one was a mobile account, on a windows network environment). For some time, a lot of files did remained as owned by the original user and not the current Admin user. But I think everything is OK now, I don't have any other problems.

Regards

Rob

Would you mind posting the output from that command?

Disk Utility doesn't check permissions of user accounts. It can only check things for which there are installer receipts.

OK. Did you also do "chmod -R u+w ~"?

Hmm. OK. I'd only ever heard of this problem with migrated user accounts. If it turns out to be something different, that would be interesting.

OK.

Output of "ls -ld@e ~":

drwxr-xr-x+ 39 robertosilva staff 1326 2 Fev 15:38 /Users/robertosilva
 0: group:everyone deny delete
 1: user:761648 allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsecurity

And no, I did not had run "chmod -R u+w ~". Now I have, no changes.

Rob

For what it's worth... those "errors" are now "standard output" in 10.6 from Disk Utility.

They simply repeat every time you run Verify Permissions.

Good or bad? Nobody knows or is willing to say (from within Apple.) From a technical point of view, it is easy to understand what they mean... what the implications are, however, is the issue.

One thing i ran into on the "slow front", i had 10.0.0 installed and replaced it with 10.0.1 once i did this, i was experiencing issues so i attempted to re-install IE7. Let it run over night at the IE install screen (one with bar sweeping back/forth) and it never ended. I ultimately deleted my entire setup (bottles and all) and now it seems to operational.
