Graphics fail on 2002 PC Game "Hooligans: Storm across Europe"

I am using the trial, and found an abandonware title from my childhood:

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/hooligans-f6e#download

I have tried many settings changes and varying the Windows version for the Bottle, installing DirectX within the bottles. This game has its own "settings.exe" for graphics options (which always run, btw).

  • D3DMetal
  • DVXK
  • Got a DirectX June 2010 offline installer, tried on all.

Most times, the 2 splash screens appear but the Main Menu does not. just a black screen and the mouse icon dissapears.

I had an occasion where I got the Main Menu to load, from a XP x32 bottle, but a Windows error about x64 came up as soon as I tried starting the game from the menu. It felt like a screen "reload", but resulted in the black screen as in all other runs.

Am I doing something specifically wrong? Or extra settings needed?

imageIf I use the settings.exe file, it allows me to set the graphics options for the game and to toggle a local debug.log.

The final lines in this log files are:

OpenMovie() Cannot get the display size (Name=C:\Program Files (x86)\Hooligans\intro.m13, Error=80040403)
EndScreenUpdate() Cannot flip surfaces (Error=8876024B)

I have had alternate OpenMovie() error lines with:

OpenMovie() Cannot open the movie (Name=C:\Program Files (x86)\Hooligans\intro.m13, Error=80040217)

I can play these *.m13 files in a Mac video player (I use Iina)
