When I installed Rift - I was not given the option of creating it with a Windows 7 bottle - and under XP, Rift has many graphics issues - which I wonder are fixed using Crossover with a Windows 7 bottle for Rift... When I look at installing Rift again, I see that from the selection, that it is set to create an XP bottle... How do I get an install of Rift running on Windows 7? Or should I just go use Bootcamp and be done with it...?
There is no Windows 7 bottle for Crossover apart from Boot Camp you could try "PlayonMac" here at http://www.playonmac.com/en/ It is mostly for gamers.

I think you're running into some known issues on Macs. I wonder if you've worked through any of the Tips and Tricks in our Compatibility Center:
"Quick Fixes to common issues" will walk you through putting Rift into the "low quality renderer" which is what helps most people on Macs.
You didn't mention the graphics card you have on board, can you share that information? I do not believe changing the bottle type will help here or with other Wine solutions; what you are likely seeing is the limits of the driver for the graphics card you have.
I am currently running in Low Quality Renderer and want to not be.
We've been testing with a 6750 AMD Mac in-house with Rift lately. Basically, it doesn't run well unless we either enable the Low Quality Renderer in Rift or set the Video Memory Size in CrossOver. We have certainly attempted with straight Wine which would imply that any Wine alternative would not fare better. This means that much of the trouble you are seeing is with the Mac drivers. You would see better performance if you used Boot Camp and installed Windows 7 (because you would then have access to the Windows drivers).
The ability to install under Windows 7 was because I want to run
Windows 7 and also install IE 9.
I'm a little worried about this statement. If you really want to run Windows 7 on your Mac I have to very honestly say that you'll be looking at Boot Camp or Virtual Box or VMWare or Parallels. Each will allow you to install Windows 7 and run Windows applications because they are solutions that include Windows 7. Each solution has a caveat or two or three that you may or may not be willing to live with (for example, Boot Camp requires a reboot every time you want to access Windows; the other three mean you run Windows along with the MacOS at the same time and mean you take a performance hit).
On the other hand, CrossOver does not include Windows 7... it includes an open source implementation of the win32 api (Wine) and this is what allows you to run Windows applications within an operating system not meant for Windows applications. It also means that not everything will work perfectly. CrossOver depends on the Mac or Linux drivers to make use of the hardware in your system and because these drivers are often neglected or left behind by their respective developers it (CrossOver) and any application running within it suffers. Further, the implementation is incomplete and needs more work. This brings me to my other point.
Internet Explorer 9 is not going to run with CrossOver. It is rated as "known not to work" because it really does not work well at all. You are welcome to try but if you really need IE9 you will have to look at other solutions. I can't really think of a reason (other than some lines of work) to be tied to a certain browser. These days Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera all work well and are native to the MacOS. Surely one of them would suit most needs.
As happy as I was with Crossover, I decided to take the plunge and but Windows 7 and install it via Bootcamp... What a difference! I am not running Rift in full Ultra mode, with zero to no lag and it is stunning! If you really want to experience that Windows game, go W7 and Bootcamp - nothing compares!

If you want to experience it in full video quality buy a high end PC! Crossover is a great tool for those that don't want any Windows install on their Mac. I swapped to Mac last year after almost 2 decades. I got sick of the freezes and crashes of Windows 7 Pro 64. I'll take the lesser quality easily for a stable system.
