I would love to love CrossOver but nothing works

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but of the 5 Windows programs I would like to use via CrossOver (admittedly, none are on the supported list), 2 don't even install ( while there is no warning from the CrossOver installer, there is no folder created and no listing of the app in the CrossOver Run Windows listing), for one CrossOVer installs several non-executables in the folder, but not the actual app executable and installs the application installer as if it were the app itself, and in two CrossOver seems to install things correctly except that many installation sub-directories are missing and the app crashes. Sigh. I guess too good to be true really is.

You're unlucky...

I run most software I have ever needed / wanted. Only three of my softwares have refused to run / install, one that needs access to a USB device, which isn't supported. But it is not unheard of that some people have just that set of software that refuse to run. I have everything from games to many kinds of office software, so my results are better on average.

Codeweavers is aware of that possibility that you have experienced, and that's why they offer a full feature trial, so you know ahead of time if your stuff will run.

Yes, I'm running the trial version. I'm just frustrated because if CrossOver worked for these few softwares I could reclaim half my hard drive from Boot Camp and save the time booting into and out of it.

Are any of those pieces of software available as demos? What are their names?

1)

One is here as BookCAT.

http://www.fnprg.com/

It requires a license to activate, but not to install. For me, this one installs apparently correctly, but afterward when I right click on te CrossOver icon, it is not listed and there is no folder for it.

It is a MySQL-based program to catalog book titles, read dates, etc.

2)

This one: http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/downloadlegacy.asp

is available a freeware and purchased. I have purchased version, so I can't be certain the free version misbehaves in the same way.

It is a personal genealogy program.

For me, the "Legacy 8" has several entries, but no the actual program executable. Instead, the executable of the installer (not the application) appears on it's own line in the CrossOver Start-menu-like display, as if it were an installed app, not an installer.

BookCAT requires a file called fontsub.dll (version 5.1.2600.0) to be in the same folder where the program is installed and the installation of Microsoft Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8. I have not played with it too much. But I got it running.

The freeware version of Legacy 8 just worked out of the box for me but it crashes under certain circumstances... oh well

I've been working on Legacy 8. I'm not a pro-user of Legacy 8 by any means but I can get it functional, I created a tie file for it a few days ago:

http://www.codeweavers.com/bin/c4p/12408

Right now it's rated as not working. Probably because no one has tried it thus far with success. For me, I get blacked out tool-tips but the rest seems functional. Again, I don't use it for day to day items to I have no way of really knowing what works and what does not.

With your help I've been able to get BookCAT and Legacy 8 running, although I don't yet know how much functionality is limited.

The Strat-o-maric Baseball game still fails with a protection fault. The looks like a misplaced VC80 and MFC80 to me.

The log and the failure message are displayed below:

This is your problem. Try installing the Visual C++ 2005 runtimes. Crosstie is here: [http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=6850](http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=6850)

HTH,
Silviu

Thanks.

I'm having trouble understanding buckets. Fro this 2005 Runtime redistributable, must I install it into te bucket I already crated for the strat-o-matic app, or must I install the runtime and then reinstall strat-o-matic, or does simply installing the runtime from the crosstie make it available wherever it is needed?

You install it in the same bottle where the application was installed.

Hi John
Crossover bottles do not interact with one another so you will install the runtime into the bottle Where it is needed.

OK, thanks.

I'm seeing progress on my Stra-o-matic 2012 installation in CrossOver, but it's not quite there yet.

The game has a serial number verification step, where it asks for the serial number, and then verifies that number with a server somewhere.

Does CrossOver have some limitation on wireless access to a local LAN to access the internet?

The debug log display the following:
