Stuttering Steam Strangeness

So this issue has occurred with two separate games - one which was ignored for a while and then launched (Valkyria Chronicles), and one which worked fine, was uninstalled, and then re-installed sometime later (LEGO Marvel Superheroes).

These are both steam games, and they both experience the same problem: audio stuttering so bad it makes the game unplayable. The FPS counter tells me that LEGO Marvel is running at reasonable FPS rates, but the game plays like every second or third frame is being dropped. Dialogue, music, everything is affected and strung out, so a word like "hello" comes out like "h-h-e-e-l-l-l-l-o-o" and so on.

These were both games that, until recently, worked perfectly. They are also games I would really like to keep playing. This issue does not affect all games on Steam (MAss Effect, for example, is unaffected). Any help?

(In case it's not clear the issue is definitely an audio one - playing the game on 'mute' shows no issues with normal gameplay)

Did you recently update Crossover?
Update the Mac OS?
Update the game?

One thing to try is installing DirectX 9 Modern into the same bottle as Steam https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/directx-9-for-modern-games Click Install Now, expand the "Will install into.." section and choose your Steam bottle.

I also have this problem playing Final Fantasy VII Steam version with CrossOver 15, which is a very recently updated version.

Thus I'm still using 14.
