I downloaded the crossover file for Linux, but I am then told the link needs to be opened with an application; Send to: ???
Help to install the file would be much appreciated.

It is an executable. For security reasons files downloaded from the Internet don't have the executable permission bit set. Just right click on the file and set the executable permission, or however this works in your distribution.
