I am a recent Ubuntu convert currently running a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu 9.10. The only Windows files I would like to access through Linux are Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 2007.
Question: what is the difference in ratings between Wine and Crossover? Excel, Word, and Powerpoint show a Silver rating in Wine. In Crossover they are rated Bronze/Bronze/Silver respectively.
There are several differences to Wine and CrossOver in the way in which programs are installed but essential CrossOver is Wine with a fancy front end and set of easy to use installers to ease the frustration involved with installing something to plain Vanila WINE.
However is is also important to note that the Codeweavers devs often fix issues with WINE and submit patches upstream so people using Vanila versions of WINE can benefit from it.
So to sum up:
WINE and CrossOver are essentialy the same thing WINE powers CrossOver
CrossOver allows for easier installtion through WINE and has improvements to the WINE core that may or maynot yet be upstream
I find the crossover rating system a little easier as there are less catagories. there is no need for platinum I find.
Please Note: This Forum is for non-application specific questions relating to installation/configuration of CrossOver. All application-specific posts to this Forum will be moved to their appropriate Compatibility Center Forum.
