I recently upgraded my Ubuntu Lucid Lynx distro (amd64) to the Maverick Meerkat Beta. However, my Crossover install doesn't seem to work properly anymore ; for instance (using Crossover Games 9.1) :
when launching a Telltale Game, I get an error message indicating the "securom security module couldn't be actived" (well, I'm translating from French, it may differ)
when launching Starcraft 2, I get the title screen, then it instantly crashes and gets back to the desktop
Out of curiosity, I tried some native games : they still work properly. BTW, an option is now added because of a compatiblity issue between Xorg and the nvidia proprietary drivers : "Option "IgnoreABI" "True". Apart from that, nothing special.
Did any of you upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10 beta as well ?
The nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 driver packages are incompatible with the x.org in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. Setting the IgnoreABI option may allow a 2D desktop to start and provide some basic functionality, but you cannot expect acceleration to be reliable.
The latest nvidia-current (which is 256.53) should start without the IgnoreABI option. If you are using nvidia-current, then you should upgrade the Nvidia driver and revert the x.org configuration.
Thanks for the reply. Actually, you are refering to a different issue. (ATM, I'm using the new 260.x Nvidia driver which fixes the compatibily issue with Xserver 1.9)
I worked around this issue by editing /etc/sysctl.d/10-ptrace.conf and setting kernel.yama.ptrace_scope = 0, but I wonder what are the other consequences...
This way, everything is back to normal. But I guess it has to be fixed differently in wine.
I'm a little surprised there is no fix yet for this issue (it was fixed in upstream wine meanwhile) because it prevents users from using a big amount of apps (with copy protection for instance) unless they modify a security setting in the OS.
(Well I guess that's because one cannot just "backport" a single fix and hence a complete series of tests have to be performed as well)
Yep, that's indeed very likely, thanks for the reply :)
It can be worked-around meanwhile (cf. my post above).
