MIDI support using ALSA (please help)

Hello,

I have been trying to use a USB MIDI controller with Crossover. I have installed software (OpenMPT) and it's all working great except for the MIDI controller input.

I have seen a possible solution to this using ALSA rather than pulse audio, but I cannot figure out how to install/use it.

Please could someone explain how to use ALSA so I can use MIDI controllers with Crossover. I am really new so cannot understand the instructions, where or how to run the commands mentioned in the link.
