Can't start Steam

Hey all. I have an M1 MBP, just bought Crossover 21, installed steam through crossover and it won't launch. The icon appears and then disappears from my dock, no errors, just doesn't start.

Hi Peter,

What version of Big Sur are you running? And do you have any antivirus software installed?

Best,
Meredith

No AV, and 11.5.2. I just did a full cleanout of Crossover from my laptop, reinstalled everything but still the same thing.

Must be some logs somewhere no?

Do you happen to have something call “Clean My Mac X” installed?

Interesting, I sure do. But I also keep it's scanning features off. Have you seen issues with it?

By the way, I installed notepad++ just to see if any application works and it does.

I’d found that app (and older version) ended up breaking my system and required a reinstall and yes the scanning can cause problems.

I haven’t tested in the last couple of days but I did receive a report saying Steam was working just a black screen that that wasn’t with CrossOver.

So I actually got this working by clearing out everything manually and then reinstalling Crossover. I used it several times today and now again its the same thing where Steam just doesn't launch.

What are the troubleshooting steps here? Are there any errors I can find somewhere? I mean honestly my only other recourse is to get a refund cause I got this for Steam.

Hi Peter,

For troubleshooting, my best guess is that CleanMyMac X is causing problems for CrossOver on your machine. Programs like antivirus are the only thing I know of that causes issues like this :/

Best,
Meredith

I removed CleanMyMac yesterday.

Are there no logs?

Hi Peter,

Yes, there are logs and other troubleshooting steps, but please open a support ticket for further assistance.

Best,
Meredith
