.NET application (Microsoft Threat Modeling Tool) is crashing

I have a .NET application that I'd like to run on Crossover:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/security/develop/threat-modeling-tool-releases

It's a .NET ".application" file that downloads its app and launches it. If I try to use it in Crossover, the app launches, it executes the download process successfully, shows the Microsoft splash screen, and then gives a "failed to launch" error.

Pastebin of the application error log:

My questions are twofold - one is, of course, whether I can do anything to get this app to run. And two is, if not, how responsive is Crossover to licensed customers who want the ability to add a new app? I'm on a trial right now to see if it will work for my needs.

For context, my office has a bunch of Mac users who will be expected to use this tool, and installing a VM for every one of them just to run this app seems heavy-handed. I'm looking for a solution that I can recommend to management.

Hi there,

I was able to get a little further than you did, but the application still crashed. For reference, I installed .NET 4.7.2 in a win10 64-bit bottle (following the listed system requirements) and then tried running the .application in that bottle.

To answer your second question, I'm not exactly sure what your definition of "responsive" is :) When users submit tickets to report a Windows application not working well in CrossOver, our support team will try it out if they're able to (if we don't have access to a copy of the software, we might not be able to try it) and let the users know if they were able to tweak something and get it to work. That process would look similar to what I reported above for my efforts to get the application in question working.

If an application still doesn't work, then we're looking at a need for development. Unfortunately, we are not able to fix every problem that gets reported - there are just too many Windows apps out there - and so we prioritize easy fixes and fixes for the most popular applications. We do also offer custom development services if users do not want to wait and see if their problem happens to get fixed, but that is not covered by the purchase of a CrossOver license.

I hope this clarifies things for you, but let me know if you have other questions.

Best,
Meredith

Thanks Meredith, that's helpful.

I work in a dev company so I understand that not everything can get prioritized. I guess the crux of the issue is: if I can get this working with support, or if there's a reasonable chance that someone will help me fix it, I can confidently recommend this as a solution to my manager as an alternative to VMs.

I'm happy to purchase a license for trial purposes; do you think support will be able to offer any more troubleshooting than you just walked through, or is this more likely to be a dev backlog item?

Hi there,

It's unlikely that our support team would do more than I already tried; they would also point you to this article with more troubleshooting tips: https://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/mactutorial/unsupported_deps

The most likely scenario is that this would be a dev backlog item.

Best,
Meredith
