Steam and Directx levels of awesome...

So i'm running XO 6.2.1 and when i run the update is says it's the most up to date version - even though i see other's talking about 7.0

-Black Macbook
-C2D 2.0
-Intel GMA 950 (lame i know)
-2gb DDR2-667

Steam client installed fine, most of the time the login process takes a minute. At first i was getting some error about not supporting a demo version or something... ? that seems to have gone away on it's own. I followed the instructions i found around here somewhere about letting XO grab the steam installer and let it DL the whole CS:S game even if i have the discs, 3 hours later;

Every time i launch CS:S I get;

"Your video drivers appear to be out of date and could cause problems if you choose to continue and run the game. We strongly recommend that you follow the link below and update your video drivers to the latest version available from your driver vendor

Your Driver Details

Windows Version: Windows XP
Description: Direct3D HAL
Version 6.14.0.9"

then it gives me a link to none other than Nvidia's website... when i have an Intel GMA (Which sucks, i know)

So the question is, as I've had just a terrible time location an OSx update for the GMA950, What the heck do i do now?

I can click continue anyway, running the gfx test and On recommended settings with 1024x768, i get 12fps if i'm lucky, with everything on low i get 17-20fps... if i drop it to 800x600 i get ~25fps. If i add "-novid -windowed -width 800 -height 600 -gl -dxlevel 70 -heapsize 524288" i get 53fps but the windows is 'smallish' if i run "-novid -windowed -width 1024 -height 768-gl -dxlevel 70 -heapsize 524288" i get 25.5

Any help would be appreciated. Telling me "Tough, that's as good as it gets with Intel integrated." Will make me hate you. But i will understand and eventually get over it.

  • just found out that if i run

-novid -windowed -width 1024 -height 768 -gl -dxlevel 81 -heapsize 524288

I get a whopping 6.1fps!

Surely there must be a better way?

In short, I'm afraid you'll have to hate me. The Intel chipsets just aren't suitable for gaming.

A few more detailed notes though: The 7.0 release is CrossOver Games. It is a separate product(we split the office and game lines due to different requirements for update frequency vs testing). It should fix the false "driver outdated" warning. The warning is completely harmless though, you can ignore it.

Also, there is no "-gl" switch in Half Life 2 and any game based on it. A "-gl" switch exists in Half Life 1, and it does what it says, it selects the games opengl renderer, which is the default. Half Life 2 supports direct3d only.

I recommend testing both dxlevel 81 with lowest in-game settings vs dxlevel 70 with other settings. For a more conclusive comparison I recommend setting "r_waterdrawreflection 0" and "r_waterdrawrefraction 0". This will disable some water effects that add extra cost in dxlevel 81, but aren't rendered in dxlevel 70. This way I think dxlevel 81 is faster than dxlevel 70, due to more efficient use of shaders. It will look pretty much the same though. Also I recommend lowering the resolution. Reducing fillrate demands is a crucial point on those Intel chipsets.
