Good morning to all who contribute to this forum. This is a post that I decided to publish in order to possibly help other CrossOver users who may be in a similar situation to mine.
I'm forced to use an old Windows software (.exe) that fortunately is an executable with few libraries and does not require installation. It can also be used from USB stick or cloud storage. This software is indispensable for my work (and not for gaming like most of the forum users).
For years I was forced to use Parallels with obvious heavy feedback on system resources and RAM, all to be able to run a simple .exe file and word (office). Word was essential to me because this management program works with templates in .rtf format, and unfortunately any other program that is not Microsoft Word somehow messes up and does not fully respect this type of format.
Finally I met the CrossOver team and I was able to switch to this much more streamlined platform to run my software and i was very happy on Intel machine (installing Office2010 to deal with .rtl files)
After the changeover to the M1 machine, unfortunately, for some reason still unknown to me, the Office 2010 package compatible with CrossOver that I purchased stopped working, giving an error (rosetta2?) that even the CrossOver support was not able to replicate or understand what it is that prevents the saving of Office files on Big Sur machine M1.
Desperate because obviously this software needed to work I get in touch with support. I must admit that in this period of transition from parallel to crossover Ryan from the support team has been absolutely great and extremely helpful so kudos to all the team staff for the assistance. Despite this the problem is not resolved. Office is not working. I am unable to generate patient reports in .rtf format (I am a surgeon).
As a stratagem to get around the problem I try to install Word for Mac but unfortunately, any version of CrossOver has as a setting Wine opening .rtf files with "wine wordpad" that is a small text editor program absolutely insufficient for my needs. What I was trying to do was to make CrossOver manage .rtf files from a native application on Macintosh.
Unfortunately, the support told me that it was not possible in CrossOver to modify the association of certain types of files with the program used to open them.
Discouraged by a similar response from the same assistance I did not give up and I searched the Internet and found a solution that currently and hopefully in the future is working for me and may be useful for other users who in the future may find themselves in a similar situation.
By editing the registry I was able to delete the .rtf file association the default reader so it resets it to zero this way it is opened from Macintosh on Word for Mac.
Following is a short video with two examples of two bottles one with edited registry and one with unedited registry (default Crossover).
