I recommend to look into the Steam Documentation/FAQ first; A usually helpful thing to do is to reset your network hardware and to try to ping the server from the Linux/OSX command line.
How do I reset my hardware thing?
Well, that really depends on your modem / router / etc. Usually plugging the power and powering them back on is enough. But before you do that, try to ping the server from the mac terminal; If the ping is bad there as well, the problem is not crossover's fault.
