So here's my weird issue, I'm running crossover games 7.0 on a MBP 2.33 C2D (with a radeon x1600). I'm trying to play counter-strike 1.6 off of steam, and no matter what resolution I choose I always end up getting 45-50 FPS when I'm just running around, but then if there's anything happening it drops to an unplayable 15-20 FPS. I know people play CSS at better framerates that those. Am I doing anything wrong or is this what I should expect?
This framerate is clearly wrong. CS 1.6 should run at 100+ fps on a MBP, even on busy servers. Can you check if you have any powersaving settings throttling down your hardware, or any other Mac app eating CPU time?
well I figured it out... apparently the geniuses at apple decided it would be a good idea to throttle MBP performance when yon don't have a battery in, so you get about half performance overall without a battery.
Yeah it is very strange, and nobody on the all-knowing great internets has come up with a solution or explanation. Many others have confirmed the problem though (with various tests) and reported them on the apple forums.
