I am a new user trying to get steam to work on my Linux distribution. First the system, specs etc.
Fresh installation of Ubuntu 8.10 (64bit)
3.2 ghz Athlon 6400+ CPU
4GB DDR2 memory
I installed crossover games on my machine and it worked fine for Internet Explorer 6, so I followed that install up with putting Steam on my pc. When it didn't work right away, i searched the forums / google to find some tips. I was informed the installer has a bug during the initial update, so I copied the folder (minus games) from my windows partition. After copying the directory, Steam was able to update and I was able to log into my steam account. After which, it pops up two steam windows which are 100% transparent. When I close the windows, they flash briefly on the screen and then disappear. The result is the same if I install steam in a windows XP bottle or a windows 2k bottle.
man oh man, i just turned off compiz and now I can see my windows. Apparently, compiz doesn't mix well with xover games + steam.
