I'm trying to run excel 2010 course from an aquired CD but it does not show anything but a blank window on start.

Looks like whatever installed is missing a lot of pieces. I would get a new, full Office 2010 disc and install from that.
Thanks Andrew. It turned out the course was using some complex IE components. That said, installing them one by one would not make sense at all. My workaround was to install a fresh VM with windows 7 and launch it natively.
