If you have a recent nvidia video card, and run Gentoo linux use portage to install your nvidia drivers instead of using the nvidia installer (from nvidia.com).
"emerge -av nvidia-settings" should do it.
Also, don't forget to tell opengl to use the nvidia libraries:
"opengl-update nvidia"
If opengl-update complains about nvidia not being a valid option, you don't have the libraries properly installed.
Using the nvidia libraries increased my performance dramatically.
