Wheel Of Time Tips

Installation

I was able to successfully install The Wheel of Time in a Win98 bottle on the following machine:

Soyo SY-7ISA+ Intel i815 Motherboard
Intel Pentium III 866 MHz Processor
512 MB SDRAM
PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 AGP 8x 256 MB DDR Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 PCI Sound Card (SB0220) Samsung CD-RW/DVD Drive Model:  TS-H492A/RSWN Dual Boot openSUSE Linux 10.3/Windows XP Pro CodeWeavers CrossOver Games for Linux Version 7.1.2

I was also able to install the latest update (WoTPatch333b.exe) and Direct3D patch (WoTD3DPatch2.exe).

When I attempted to start the game using the autoexec.exe file in the CD-ROM #2 root directory, both the hard drive and the CD-ROM drive were accessed for several seconds, but eventually the activity stopped and no windows or screen changes ever took place, and the game processes terminated.  I noticed when installing the game that the installer gave the option to install QuickTime 4 since it is needed to play the in-game movies.  I made installations with and without the QuickTime 4 installation, but neither made a difference in the game, and the QuickTime 4 installation in the bottle would not play a movie independently.  I used the Kaffeine Player in openSUSE 10.3 to see if I could play the movies outside of the game/bottle, and got messages that I needed two additional 3rd-party codecs in order to play the movies:

XviD (Xine, 32 bit, i586)
Sorenson Video 1 (Xine, 32 bit, i586)

So it looks like someone with a Mac running CrossOver/Wine is going to have a much better chance of running the game since they can install QuickTime natively.  If you are going to try to install the game in Linux, I would suggest that you first use your media player(s) to try and play the movies in the Movies subdirectory on CD #2 in order to see if you have the necessary codecs/plugins beforehand.
