The Steam version works well. However there are a few things one must do before the game will work correctly. There are two main issues that are present.
1) The game will barf out upon starting of a new game unless the music directory is renamed/removed/moved 2) Mouse issues.
To rectify the first issue.
Go into your file browser of choice and goto the Steam bottle. ~/.cxgames/Steam/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam/steamapps/common/unreal\ ii\ the\ awakening/
Move the Music directory somewhere else, delete it, or just rename it to something else, such as 1Music or something. Just make it not say 'Music' Done with that.
For any mouse movement issues, we have some registry edits: 1) Enter the bottle manager and select the steam bottle in which U2 is installed. 2) Click 'Run Command' and run 'regedit'. Don't close the bottle manager window yet (we will need it open during step 4) 3)
You can copy and paste the following keys into a text file saved as a
.reg file and import it, or go one by one verifying/adding the keys. For the Video Size key in the Direct3D section, set it to be your video RAM size that your 3D board has on it. For me, the first one here (the DirectInput one) the hive entry wasn't there, so I had to add that so I could add the key.
That should do it. A few of these registry edits are going to be obsolete soon, most certainly by CX11. Wine 1.3.21+ has deprecated that MouseWarpOverride need, and many others are being worked on by both CW and the Wine devs.
