It's useful to be able to do data entry on my OS X 10.6.7 Mac using CrossOver for Mac 10.0.1. However, regardless of what way I use to download and install an update to UFile 2010, the version that I'm running doesn't seem to actually change. That precludes using NetFile from the Mac, because the Canada Revenue Agency's NetFile certification isn't normally granted until after the first versions of tax software ship.
Until today, I haven't noticed different results on the Mac than on my wife's WIndows XP computer, but I'm now seeing that differing optimizations (claiming of medical expenses and charitable donations) are producing much different results. And because of different bottom-line figures for 2010, there's a significant difference in the level of installment payments reported to be due in 2011 and 2012.
My recommendations:
use UFile/CrossOver for data entry, but check results against those produced by UFile under Windows, and
only use UFile/CrossOver to file a paper or electronic return if the results have been verified, and
check whether the version that's supposed to be downloaded and installed during updating changes the version that's reported by UFile/CrossOver.
