There may be exceptions, but in general, you can dismiss an open menu or dialog box by simply pressing the esc key. If you're familiar with the location of the esc in the top left corner of your keyboard (which, as a hardware convention, should hold for Mac and Linux users), this will usually be faster than using the mouse.
