TurboTax 2003 Tips

TurboTax 2006 won't install from CD

For some reason, sometimes TurboTax 2006 won't install from the CD. First check to make sure the CD is not damaged physically, and then create a location on your hard drive to copy the CD contents with the command: cp -a /mnt/cdrom/* /path/to/local/copy/dir/

After copying some of the file names will not be correct (truncated). You can fix them for Turbo Tax 2006 Deluxe (Deduction Maximizer) by painstakingly going through each file and renaming them to the correct (long) name. (Old link to this script is broken - sorry) Remember to make sure the file permissions and ownership are correct for writing.

Finally, create a win2000 bottle in CrossOver and install IE 6 into it. After that is installed, install TurboTax 2006 from an Alternate CD location of the /path/to/local/copy/dir/. It should work from that point on!
