Here's what I've been able to confirm thus far when attempting to
install Trainz 2006 using Crossover:
The installer will start (and will even allow you to watch the intro
video), but after it asks for the serial number and begins copying
files, the installer will stall with a dialog box asking the following:
"Please insert disk 0 that contains the file data3.cab."
In examining the installer DVD, I found that no such file exists
(although a data1.cab and data2.cab both exist). If you create a dummy
file or simply make a duplicate of one of the other two .cab files and
rename it data3.cab, the installer will prompt you for data4.cab. I've
gone as far as providing dummy files up to data12.cab, but it
consistently asks for the next one up each time.
I've verified this for 98, 2000, and XP bottles using a Trainz 2006
DVD.
As a workaround, I installed Trainz 2006 on a Virtual machine running
XP on Parallels and then copied the Trainz folder inside of the Program
Files folder to the OS X desktop. I then tried running Trainz from that
folder, and it ran beautifully—without hardly any text. The game's
engine, however, takes advantage of the 3D acceleration on the MacBook
Pro in my tests and is silk-smooth. Unfortunately, it's not very
playable without being able to read which buttons you're pressing. It
seems to me that as long as we can get the installer to complete, we'll
be in business, however.
